WashTech now commenting on CNN outsourcing report

Dear members and subscribers, CNN is showcasing an ireport against outsourcing of American jobs. I’ve posted a comment on it. I urge all of you to join us in sharing your outrage against outsourcing. See link below. My comment is the first one.

3. I think there has to be more participation in small local businesses. Take a look around you.

They are there if you look - at least most of what you need is. And if it isn't then build what you need or start a local business with friends at flea markets if you have too. We support our local businesses and recycle a lot now. I have started to sew more and will be growing a lot of our food this year and will be buying from local farmer's markets too. This doesn't make the big picture much better but in your own way you can make a dent even if it is a tiny one. I deplore H1B visas unless it is a very specialized area and I differently buy American when I can!

5. Small Businesses Were Squashed Over The Past Decade...

...actually since the beginning of the "Raygun Revolution"...where bigger was better. I saw mom and pop busineses driven out by the malls and big boxes. They couldn't afford the selection and then, thanks to Wally World's "lowest pricing" policy and "exclusive" agreements all but froze those mom and pops that remained into the ground. The same goes for Home Despot and the local hardware stores and so on. The ability to compete became tougher and tougher as you had to match billion dollar corporates who all but smothered the local retail. Consumers saw it as having greater "selection" and the "lowest prices"...as these big volume buyers and sellers destroyed the old small business districts. The only small businesses that thrived were ones that specialized in services rather than goods.

Maybe with the collapse of the "bigger is better" society we'll have a new mindset that local is not only good for the economy, but good for the common good as well. To me, the biggest joke of the boooosh years was the concept of the "ownership society"...that was lost when the corner store and the private entrepeneur was unable to survive.

4. I can't see how our economy can heal if there are no decent jobs

for low to medium skilled workers here in the USA. The unemployment numbers don't even reflect the truth of the situation as so many workers have had to take on jobs at places like McDonald's. They may be working but they don't have near the buying power they used to have. They're just staying alive.

I've retrained twice in my life after watching my jobs go to China and India. I thought I was safe after training for an IT job, but no. I require a living wage and I guess that's just too much to ask for when there are desperate people in less-developed countries with weak environmental and labor laws.

If Obama doesn't stop the hemorrhaging of American working-class jobs, he's not the leader I thought he would be and sadly I'll have to chalk him down as just a whole lot more of the same. :(

Offshoring is the problem area.
