The very clearest message of the night: "If you make less than a quarter of a million dollars .....
" ..... you will not pay one more dime in taxes, and most of you will get a tax reduction."

Not even Mike, Sara, or Piyush can spin that one.

2. That was about the most hollow speech I can recall.
Nothing but old republican blather.

3. I always preferred that phrasing to $250,000
That's what I said when I was canvassing.

4. It was preemptive. So clearly aimed at all Americans who might be misled by the GOP spin to come.
I loved it because it was Obama clearly thinking ahead.

You know, I wanted Kucinich. But I love it when I'm happily surprised.

5. Not a quarter-million for an individual, but for a family.

9. It's in the transcript:
"If your family earns less than $250,000 a year, a quarter-million dollars a year, you will not see your taxes increased a single dime."

7. Does that apply to a small business?
I heard somewhere that many small business owners file on their own income form. Would a "Frank's Dry Cleaning" who takes in 300,000 but has costs of 240,000 still fall in the no raised taxes category?

8. Of course...you deduct expenses against your gross receipts.
In your example, that person would be taxed on $60,000 (assuming he has all of his receipts!).

I will give you a real-world example...in one year I had total receipts of $168,000, and deductible expenses of $54,000, so I was taxed on $114,000.

18. i have heard that 2% at most of small businesses would be affected by this.
Whoever had said it said that a small business that makes more than $250k and hasn't incorporated needs to talk to their accountant, or something. I can't remember who said it or when it was. But i think it was yesterday or monday i heard it. makes sense to me.

11. Actually the clearest message of the night was "We do not torture"
When Bush said it we knew it was just noise. When President Obama said it last night it was a clear message to the world.

16. That one got me up on my feet pumping air
I'd be pissed if I was in any one of our Soldiers shoes right now and especially if I was in Iraq or Afghanistan because I know full well that if I was captured I would be tortured. I was part of the teaching team at the Navy's S.E.R.E. training camp at Warner Springs Ca. from early '68 through mid '69 so I am well aware of what the implications of us having a torture program ourselves is. dick and w need to be hanged for that alone. It needs to be a public hanging too.

12. Amen! Plus only 5% of small businesses make more than $250,000 profits so that argument ...
doesn't wash either. Plus, that 5% can negotiate - help them not be taxed into failing.

15. First off thats $250K net, not gross, and second, one is personal tax, the other is business
Who would be running a quarter million dollar (net) per year business and report it as personal income? It is an argument as hollow and the various version of the 'death tax'.

17. OK. But it's an argument that the GOP often uses - "It will hurt the small business owner."
We need to CONTINUE to correct this propaganda.

13. For those who don't have a job, this really doesn't mean much.
x( I wouldn't mind paying more taxes if I made a quarter of a million dollars or even slightly less than that.

14. The concentration of wealth has not been this desperate since 1929. The RICH do not spend.
It is right to REDISTRIBUTE the wealth a little when the HOGS (Robber Barons) are the only ones at the trough.

19. !
 Pay me $250,000 and take 50%! Still leaves me enough to live on.

Consider this, half of the World's pop. lives on less than $3 a day! :wow:

I have never understood those who bitch about paying taxes, especially when generally speaking, those who make more, pay more.
