They are very nice companion dogs and retain their cuteness beyond puppyhood. My dog plays with one at the park every so often. She's very, very pretty.

My daughter (almost 9) is INSANE for kitties. We stopped by a no-kill shelter yesterday (they let the kitties out of their cages in a big room) to drop off donations. I used to work across the street from a Petco, and would swing by after work to look at the kitties (a cat rescue group operated from there).. I would just stare at all the little sweethearts, wanted to adopt all of them... One day, I fell in love with one (a fluffy calico), and after getting very grudging 'permission from my husband (we already had a cat), adopted her!

She turned out to be the cat-love of my life...

Wow... 3 little darlings at home! That's what I call paradise! :)

My allergies were a mess the entire time I had my precious Muffy.
They are better now because I get the Allergy shots, they have really worked for me.

My new allergy doctor tells me, no matter the breed, when the little doggie plays in the grass and comes inside to greet you -- he/she is carrying all the pollens etc.

Either way, I would gladly suffer all my Kleenex for more years with Muffy.

19. Darling littl dog!!!! The only thing I did hear about that breed was

from several owners at the AKC dog show a week or so ago. An interviewer asked 3 or 4 owners about them specifically because the Obama's were considering one for their girls. They all said they were very friendly, and a great pet, EXCEPT for one thing....they all love to chew things and will destroy your house! They chew clothes, shoes, furniture, and anything else they can get their mouth on!!!

I preobably would have dismissed the comment is it had only been one person, but every one of the owners said the same thing. I guess the advantage in the WH is that there's always somebody around to watch the little furball and keep him/her out of trouble!

you know, channel the behavior. The UP side to that, puppies get a lot of interaction with humans constantly moving them to chew toys. Hopefully, it's done in a loving and patient manner.

78. I know all puppiesd whew, but the owners who were interviewed stated that it was a lifelong

thing with the P Water Dog. To quote one owner, "They're wonderful dogs but they will destroy your house!" I've had many dogs in my lifetime, and currently have three. When my oldest little flufferbutt was a pup, he destroyed many many thing. He would push the sliding doors to my closet open and steal ONE shoe and shew the heel, then go back and sreal another show from a different pair! He stole my lipstick from my purse and had bright pink all over himself! (Hes a totally white Bichon!!!) He stole my mother's false teeth from her bedside and chewed some of he teeth off! Ohhhh, I could go on....

He's now 17 years old. He stopped shewing almost everything at about age 3. All he bothers with now are kleenex and paper towels out of the trash. It makes a mess but doesn't damage anything.

The impression I got while listening to these show dog owners was that the P Water Dog never outgrows their damaging behavior. As I said, the WH is probably the best surroundings though because someone will always be there to deter the bad behavior.

Six Portuguese water dogs, known as the Baseball Aquatic Retrieval Korps, or BARK, is on the job. San Francisco's newest team is poised to snag the floating prizes in the name of charity.

The dogs made their splashy debut this weekend leaping from the decks of their motorboat, the Good Ship Jollipup, into the bay just 20 feet beyond the rightfield wall. They are scheduled to appear again Tuesday, when the Giants take on the Colorado Rockies.

BARK is the brainchild of Father Guido Sarducci, the stage name of comedian Don Novello. The self-proclaimed Vatican gossip columnist teamed up with Pets in Need, a Redwood City, Calif.-based animal adoption agency, to locate and train the dogs. Pets in Need will receive a $5,000 donation from the Giants, and can auction any of the balls the BARKers pick up.

The Portuguese Water Dog once existed all along Portugal's coast, where it was taught to herd fish into the nets, to retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and to act as a courier from ship to ship, or ship to shore. Portuguese Water Dogs rode in bobbing trawlers as they worked their way from the warm Atlantic waters of Portugal to the frigid fishing waters off the coast of Iceland where the fleets caught saltwater codfish to bring home.

In Portugal, the breed is called Cao de Agua (pronounced Kown-d'Ahgwa). Cao means dog, de Agua means of water. In his native land, the dog is also known as the Portuguese Fishing Dog. Cao de Agua de Pelo Ondulado is the name given the longhaired variety, and Cao de Ague de Pelo Encaradolado is the name for the curly-coat variety.

A calm, intelligent breed of fine temperament, rugged and robust, with a pro-fuse non-allergenic, non-shedding, waterproof coat and webbed feet, he is an ideal outdoor dog, capable of limitless work. He stands 20 to 23 inches (17 to 21 for bitches) and weighs between 42 and 60 pounds (35 and 50 for bitches) - a variation explained for by the fact that small dogs were more practical for small boats, and larger dogs for the larger boats.

Some belief exists that the breed traces as far back as 700 B.C. to the wild Central-Asian steppes, near the Chinese-Russian border, terrains and waters guaranteed to nourish ruggedness. The early people who lived here raised cattle, sheep, camels, or horses, dependent upon where they lived. They also raised dogs to herd them. Isolated from the rest of the world, these dogs developed into a definite type, very much like the heavier long-coated Portuguese Water Dog.

One theory of these long-perished times is that some of the rugged Asian herding dogs were captured by the fierce Berbers. The Berbers spread slowly across the face of North Africa to Morocco. Their descendants the Moors, arrived in Portugal in the 8th century, bringing the water dogs with them.

Another theory purports that some of the dogs left the Asian steppes with the Goths, a confederation of German tribes. Some (the Ostrogoths) went west and their dogs became the German pudel. Others (the Visigoths) went south to fight the Romans, and their dogs became the Lion Dog. In A.D. 400, the Visigoths invaded Spain and Portugal (then known only as Iberia) and the dogs found their homeland.

These theories explain how the Poodle and the Portuguese Water Dog may have developed from the same ancient genetic pool. At one time the Poodle was a longer-coated dog, as is one variety of the Portuguese Water Dog. The possibility also exists that some of the long-coated water dogs grew up with the ancient Iberians. In early times, Celtiberians migrated from lands which now belong to southwestern Germany. Swarming over the Pyrenees, circulating over the whole of western Europe, they established bases in Iberia, as well as in Ireland, Wales, and Brittany The Irish Water Spaniel is believed to be a descendant of the Portuguese Water Dog.

Interest first began in the United States in 1958 when Mr. and Mrs. Harrington of New York received a pair from England as part of a trade of rare breeds. Among those taking an early interest in the breed were Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Miller of Connecticut, who acquired the first direct import to this country from Portugal - a puppy bitch purchased from Senhora Branco, a former lady bullfighter who had inherited Dr. Bensuade's kennels in Portugal.

On August 13, 1972, sixteen people involved with the breed met at the Millers' home to form the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America. At the time there were only twelve known dogs of the breed in America, but the breeders worked dedicatedly and by September 1982 the number of dogs had grown to over 650, located in 41 states, and there were over 50 serious breeders.The Portuguese Water Dog was admitted to the Miscellaneous class on June 3, 1981. Three months later, the breed had its first Obedience champion, Spindrift Kedge. The Portuguese Water Dog was accepted for registration in AKC stud books effective August 1, 1983, and became eligible to compete in the show rings as a member of the Working Group, effective January 1, 1984.

If you can put some time into training and exercising a dog, an Australian Cattle Dog is great. We have two and they go to work with me most days. But they are very, very smart and you have to train them or they will end up training you.

A boxer is a good option, as is a rescued greyhound. A greyhound may be too large for you- they get about 80 pounds- but they're couch potatoes and, in general, very calm animals.

First lady Michelle Obama tells People magazine that the target date for the arrival of the family pet is after her daughters' spring break trip in April, though 7-year-old Sasha is convinced the dog is coming April 1.

"So Sasha says 'April 1st.' I said, 'April.' She says, 'April 1st.' It's like, April!" said Mrs. Obama.

The Obama girls — Sasha and 10-year-old Malia — attend the private Sidwell Friends school, which has spring break March 20-29 and a day off for students on April 13.

The family wants a rescue Portuguese Water Dog who is the appropriate age and match.

"Temperamentally they're supposed to be pretty good," Mrs. Obama said. "From the size perspective, they're sort of middle of the road — it's not small, but it's not a huge dog. And the folks that we know who own them have raved about them. So that's where we're leaning."

The first couple and their daughters have been going back and forth on possible names. Among the two Mrs. Obama mentioned — and nixed — were Frank and Moose.

I was hoping the First Family would pick a shelter dog because they would make it ultra cool and more people would do the same. Thank you First Family! Thank you. Thank you.

I also think it's wonderful to even do that. One of my dogs is a shelter dog and she's the most loving dog I've ever had. She's also a fabulous athlete who catches frizbees in mid air while summer saulting and returns them right to my hand every time.
