12. Years ago, I worked in retail.

During the holidays, we hired a bunch of temporary seasonal help. One of them was a nice lady who was named Dorcas by her parents. (No lie.) She was normally pretty good, but sometimes had to be told repeatedly how to do something. One day, on the sales floor, I discovered she'd processed some paperwork incorrectly, that would cause a delay in that customer's items being shipped out. This had been brought to her attention before, several times.

When the guys in shipping noticed the errors, it meant they would have to work overtime to get everything sent out that day, or it would be late. I told them I would talk to her about it again.

Dorcas was on the sales floor, and I approached her and said, "Dorcas, shipping is going to stay late tonight to get these things out, but please remember to fill out this section if the customer has paid extra for priority shipping. If left blank, the guys in shipping assume it's just a normal shipment."

Dorcas apologized, and I thanked her for her time. She walked off, and a customer came up to me and ripped me a new one for being so disrespectful to an employee! The man was literally screaming at me. Dorcas realized what was happening, came over and nicely smiled at the man while pointing to her name tag, which said "DORCAS" on it. She told the guy he should be screaming at her parents, not at me.

The name you're given can often be unfortunate.
