"Please. Tell me you're a Republican."
According to Lynn Nofziger's contemporaneous account, that quip is what Reagan said to the surgeons as he was being rolled into the OR to have Hinckley's bullet removed.

I was reminded of this in a promo on our local allnooz radio station today. They're celebrating 40 years as an allneoozer and are playing lots of such clips.

I have no idea if this is true or urban myth, but I recall the quote clearly. So it has been aorund since the day it is supposed to have happened.

"Please tell me you're a Republican."

I can't imagine saying such a thing in those circumstances unless I was wrapped tighter than a drumhead and more concerned with power than with doing good.

I dunno ..... maybe its just me .....

Back in the California days with his idol, Dutch.....

In the White House days ......

4. Actually it was Nancy Davis that turned him...

...(the second Mrs. Reagan). She came from a family of republicans, and she converted him.

5. Lots of people joke around during serious situations.
I've heard lots of funny stuff from seriously ill and injured patients.
