Some harrumph over Michelle Obama's sleeveless dress at speech
Some harrumph over Michelle Obama's sleeveless dress

—Wendy Donahue
February 26, 2009

Sleevelessness is next to tawdriness if you ask some citizens who spotted Michelle Obama in the audience of her husband's speech Tuesday night.

Although the first lady has been admired for her signature sheaths that expose toned arms, her choice of a Narciso Rodriguez sleeveless dress in this setting ignited some indignation.

"Does the lady not understand that these Big Speech Events are serious and important? Not a cocktail party?" e-mailed Tribune reader Janice Elges of Wheaton, who said she scanned the crowd for other bare arms and spied none. "The season is winter. The occasion is business. Dress was wrong place and time."

3. Fuck these kooky women and their kooky jackets
and the rest of their kooky-ass dress code. I am so sick of them. Especially the ones who claim to be feminists and then turn around and chastise a woman for looking like a woman. Argh.

18. Mmm. . . well, she kind of did
on Inauguration day. That greenish yellow coat ensemble looked like couch fabric to me.

:hide:

But I loved her in the purple dress the other night.

than Janice Elges, whoever the hell she is.

7. I thought it was pragmatic
With most of the members of Congress, media, and guests, I'd think it had to be pretty warm in there. It was probably okay for those on stage with President Obama - more room, but down in the crowd it probably got pretty hot.

12. I thought Michelle Obama looked GREAT.
She's got some serious class. A few people are looking for a reason to complain, obviously.

I guess it must be nice to have nothing more serious to worry about right now than Michelle's lack of sleeves. I guess they couldn't be bothered to complain about the fact that the Earth could be threatened by Aliens-- or giant fucking meteors-- and, (one can only assume from Bobby Jindal's "response") that all the GOP would be able to offer in the way of solutions is tax cuts, outlawing abortion, and maybe some school vouchers.

"Oh, I'm sorry, you say your house is on fire? By cutting taxes on small businesses, we will empower you to put it out yourself. Because, remember, Americans can do anything!"

28. One can only imagine what Ms. Elges's arms look like. Probably something like this:

Criticism like this is transparent in it's jealously.

The First Lady looked beautiful, young, fit and dignified.

A great example for all American women to follow.

But I would venture to guess, nobody would want to see Elges in a sleevless dress, in winter or summer.

I guess if these people are criticizing sleeveless dresses, it means there is nothing of substance that bothers them. That must be good news.
