Mayor Hits Rough Patch Over Watermelon Pic

The mayor of Los Alamitos is coming under fire for an e-mail he sent out that depicts the White House lawn planted with watermelons, under the title "No Easter egg hunt this year."

Local businesswoman and city volunteer Keyanus Price, who is black, said Tuesday she received the e-mail from Mayor Dean Grose's personal account on Sunday and wants a public apology.

"I have had plenty of my share of chicken and watermelon and all those kinds of jokes," Price told The Associated Press. "I honestly don't even understand where he was coming from, sending this to me. As a black person receiving something like this from the city-freakin'-mayor - come on."

The Orange County Register first reported the e-mail on its Web site Tuesday night.

Grose confirmed to the AP that he sent the e-mail to Price and said he didn't mean to offend her. He said he was unaware of the racial stereotype that black people like watermelons.

1. What a cute title!
I hope they write his resignation letter. Funny resignation letters just like these sort of emails are just more fun.

2. Earl Butz redux.
As far as I'm concerned, this is not over until Mayor Dean Grose is expelled from public office.

8. BIngo- there is the one and only question that needs to be asked.
If he didn't know the stereotype, why would he send it? What would be the point of the picture? Did he think there were REALLY watermelons on the lawn and he thought it was a beautiful picture? lastly- does he really think the people in his city are THAT F'n stupid?

5. he is unaware?
Good grief! Do these idiots have no common decency? I am so sick of this racist stuff and then the people that are guilty and get caught always say "I had no idea what it meant". Bullshit. They know exactly what they are doing and they just try to slide right out of it. If they are that naive, they shouldn't hold public office. Pisses me off,it does. By the way,I am a white southerner for all the duers that think that we are all cut from the same cloth down here.

9. So what exactly *did* he intend when he sent out this picture?
why watermelons????

He expects people to believe he was "unaware" of the stereotype"? It's hard to believe that from a public official who is living in a county where black people are apparently routinely subjected to this and other racist "jokes":

Local businesswoman and city volunteer Keyanus Price, who is black, said Tuesday she received the e-mail from Mayor Dean Grose's personal account on Sunday and wants a public apology. "I have had plenty of my share of chicken and watermelon and all those kinds of jokes," Price told The Associated Press.

10. He needs to be fired.
We have to fight the racism at every turn. This is why the Post cartoon was a big deal. Every time it goes unanswered, more will follow. Until the racists suffer consequences.

12. Let him suffer the fate of the hundreds/thousands of black Americans who met their fate at the end
of a rope in the slave states.

THAT is the only way that racists like him will ever learn.
