When Will Corporate America Make "Conecessions"?
The following is an excerpt from the editor of our local newspaper. You will see that this editor along with the ownership is strongly right wing and as such misses the obvious...(emphasis is mine)

"Thus, taxpayers are being asked to continue to subsidize, through borrowed money, the gold-plated retirements of GM and Chrysler workers, whose contracts let them retire after only 30 years. Many of these retirees are too young to qualify for Medicare, as columnist George Will pointed out last November. How is it fair to expect the rest of us to pay their benefits?"

Here is where I begin to ponder the illogical argument of the so-called free market proponents:

1. The contracts guaranteeing the benefits mentioned above where negotiated in good faith with the members of the UAW in accordance with the law of the land. What happened to the RW talking point of living up to your responsibilities?

2. When will corporate America begin to give concessions; you know, lower profits, lower bonuses and the like as a result of reduced retail prices, so that the average American is able to afford the basics?

3. When will the RW begin to realize the self fullfilling prophecy of the race to the bottom? Do they not get it?

Oh and btw...I thought the American Dream was retiring after 30 years of loyal service...you know the Flag, Mom and Apple Pie and all that....

I am at a loss...sigh...

2. In general I find most people
don't want to retire when their time comes. They really like there job and while maybe have no desire for 40 hr work weeks, would love to stay on part time. The fact is they want the highest earners out on the street and new cheap labor in. One almost feel the industry didn't negotiate in good faith but planned on never living up to the promises of the retired.

3. That is quite possible...
But I think that the more likley scenario is that neither the Big Three or the UAW could ever have foreseen the emergence of the Asian auto companies and the betrayal by the US consumer...
