9. Good summation of mac snobs...
"...it amazes me, absolutely amazes me, the number of Apple owners who lack the clarity or self-awareness to realize that purchasing a commodity from a enormous, soulless corporation that is also owned by several million other people doesn’t make you a unique and beautiful snowflake. Apple has a better PR campaign, better advertising and a more gullible, credulous customer base."

11. OK but I'm hardly a "Mac Snob"... I'm running the new Safari under Windows XP SP3...
and don't own a Mac.

If you could just buy the O/S X operating system and drop it on whatever box you want then I would probably do it.

Right now I'm looking at setting up an alternate boot on FreeBSD for my laptop.

19. pptht.
I'm sitting at a 9 year old Mac running contemporary software. It cost about $2k new, and I've applied about $500, maybe $600 in 9 yrs of hw upgrades to maxx out the system. No viruses, and it's a workhorse. Complete w/ a superb sound program.

So let's give it about $3k in 9 years. that's less than $350/year. It just keeps going. It's like a Honda or something.

21. I use both PCs and macs, but except for a couple very high end Toshiba Tecras
My macs are the only laptops that survive the rigors of use, like drops to the floor.

The user interface on all their products is really user friendly to me.

And, while I've had to send things into the shop, I've never had viruses or spyware or creepy OS problems with the mac.

I have a AMD Socket 1207 2 processor board just laying around. I was thinking of making a Hackintosh workstation with a couple of quad-cores. I just have to wait for ATI to release a 3870 X 2 driver for the Mac.

I will let you know how it goes... :hi:

And the avatar was HELL. Two or three tries to make it work.
Sadly, Governor Jindal is no where near as photogenic as former-Governor Blagojevich.

I am, however, waiting on some high-end leds with which I plan to build a crazy powerful flashlight and a bright floorlamp.

And no, Jindal is just goofy looking, while Blago is at one evil looking AND kinda cute, in a Bobby Sherman way. :P

37. Be CAREFUL to include a current limiting resistor in your design!
A lot of people make that mistake and blow up their expensive super-bright LED - they don't realize that if you aren't careful the thing looks like a big short circuit to a power source.

There is going to be a small forward voltage drop across the LED which you will need to subtract out and then to get the current across your LED right you will need to limit the current through the circuit to whatever the maximum current allowed is via an Ohm's law calculation (V=IR).

So for example if you have a 12 volt drop potential across your power source and a 120 Ohm limiting resistor it will pull about 100mA - you will have to consult your LED's spec sheet to find out what the maximum continuous current draw is. Also the higher you drive them the shorter they live. Instead of getting 100,000 hours out of them you might end up getting 4,000 hours.

Also be careful to calculate the power dissapation across your limiting resistor to make sure you pick a large enough resistor power wise.

One trick you can do to increase efficiency is to string multiple LED's in series (so less power overall gets dissipated by the limiting resistors) but you still ought to use one limiting resistor per series string of LED's to protect them all.

Finally make sure you heat sink both the LED and the resistor and keep them isolated from curious fingers because sooner or later someone will burn themselves on it if you are running it to the limit.

They just arrived, but this is a project that, as you suggest, is going to take some care.
Both mfgrs. provide great detailed spec sheets for resistor use.

I'll take my time.

35. Safari is damned zippy in comparison to FF
They've made it look more like iTunes with the cover flow and now that I've finally taken the time to find an ad block add-on for Safari, I think it's worth the move.

Sadly, I've discovered that it totally screws up the dumb Shockwave games and I can't waste my time on JewelQuest now. (I'm not even going to attempt a presidential tie-in here. . . :P)

49. Not extensible = I'm not interested.
Safari isn't a bad browser by any means, but the lack of extensibility is what really kills it for me.

Even on my Macbook, I use Firefox, since the public beta of 3.1 supports multitouch.
