Body Rots In Hearse After Family Fails To Pay
Woman, 52, Died In November 2007

POSTED: 7:54 pm EST February 25, 2009

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- An Alabama funeral director could lose his license if convicted on a felony charge of abusing a corpse.

Police in the town of Gadsden said Harold Watson left the decaying body of a woman inside a locked hearse after her relatives failed to pay the bill.

Fifty-two-year-old Edna Kathleen Woods died of natural causes in November 2007.

Investigators said Watson stored the corpse at his funeral home for more than a year but decided to move it about two months ago when he couldn't locate the family.

After neighbors complained, officers found the remains this week in a cardboard box inside a locked hearse.

In cases of unclaimed bodies, funeral directors can have counties dispose of the remains. And police say Wright should have known better.

2. How disgusting. He should lose his license, for sure.
What is wrong with people? So many bizarre happenings, of late. It doesn't even come close to actions of a human being.

He will probably lose his hearse, too. I can't imagine there is a disinfectant that will get the odor out of the upholstery.

3. It wasn't just a body. It was a hostage.
Harold Watson should serve time in prison for that misdeed.

4. Apparently he must have a fleet of hearses that he didn't need that one
but he should have followed procedures.

5. Well that hearse isn't usable again. I think he forgot about it.
Shame on both parties involved.
