I sold mu home which was small and built this mother in law apt. Great move for my age and I love it. When I was a kid I lived in a big house and so did lots of kids and you know half those homes were shut up in the winter to save fuel. I can sure see that going on once more.

18. Depends on how long you live in a house

My rule of thumb is that any place, house, apt, condo, coop, will get too small after 7 years when the quantity of your "stuff" starts to overflow the closets, garage, guest rooms, etc.

So, either you have to move every 7 years, which gives you a reason to get rid of all the excess junk, add an addition if possible or convince your spouse that you really don't need to keep the clothes she/he bought in 1982 because they just might come back into style.

57. I think you are right on the stuff. I have been doing away with

a lot of it as it has even grown in this small space. One can hardly figure it out or where it comes from. Why did I really think I needed to keep 4 year old bank statements and coats I had not wore in 20 yeats but they they are. I have even started dropping books off at the library.

since I'm a realtor, I bought the smallest home in my neighborhood (buy the smallest in a neighborhood that appreciates well, you make the most money if you move). If you buy the biggest in your neighborhood, you're not likely to get as much per square foot for it as others in the neighborhood when you sell.

We paid $160,000 LESS for that house in 1988 than we paid for our 3000 sq ft house when we moved to Chapel Hill in 2000. My husband has his private psychotherapy practice in our home here, too.

Square footage alone does not tell the whole story. Location is important.

We all know that 'more' is nice, but what is a realistic space for a person indoors?
1000-1200 (about 100sq Meters) square feet per person seems about right, and the poll seems to postulate that.

It raises several questions.

Laundry is often outsourced from small apartments, so whilst it might seem a person is doing ok on the small,
the reality is they are outsourcing most of their kitchen and laundry functions to launromats and restaurants,
microwave-packaged foods.

Car requires 'stuff' that requires storage space. Depending on the weather, the car itself needs
a house, a space a manhattan flat needn't consider.

cold climates can also have a fuel-store and boiler space, requiring more square footage for fire proofing
reasons around heat elements.

What about outdoor built up space, like driveways, lawns, shouldn't the real question be 'how many acres of ground
do you live on?'..

If we follow the line of inquiry, it follows to consider all the outsourced 'spaces' and water supplies that we
are not considering in our space-equation when we eat a chicken-spinach salad.

another 400 sq. ft. and the two story barn on my property is close to 3000 sq. ft. Mind you, these are structures that were built in the twenties, with a few additions. Original farmhouse and turkey barn. The garage is new, but we needed it oversized because my husband does electric car conversions and needs the space.

Oh, and it's on an acre of land, in the middle of the urban growth boundary.

The architect suggested I build a LEED Certified home, but shit, the world's largets nuclear complex is 40 miles away churning out energy courtesy of our friend the atom. The floors in the kitchen are to DIE for. Hardwoods from tropical rainforests, windows that face south so I can see the views and have that solar gain in the summer that causes the seven heat pump air conditioners to run full tilt to keep my home cool. The pool! Did I tell you about the pool? Sixty by forty and gas heated. Like most Phoenicians, I use the pool for a quick dip of five minutes, but you know just having it is such a convenience.

Did I tell you how strongly I feel about the poor, and third world countries getting their forests cut for timber? Its shocking I tell you. They should just stop clear cutting in the Amazon. Don't those people care?
