insanity. I'd say the GOP is on its

3. I think you are wrong

the evangelicals, the military, the NASCAR crowd, the gun crowd will continue to support the GOP. That keeps Kansas, Idaho, Utah, Oklahoma (I don't consider Ok in the south) in the red column. It also keeps Mo, Colo and the rest of the midwest on the brink.

The GOP will remain formidable in the MW.

4. The GOP has lost MN, IL and WI,

maybe for a generation. OH's still a toss-up because of the rural south and the Columbus suburbs. The military is split--don't forget that Latinos and African Americans are well represented in the military rank and file. If the GOP continues to alienate indies and moderates and cleave to its wingnut base (maybe 20% of the electorate), they will indeed be relegated to regional party status after another few elections. What I see is a Republican party split, and the rise of a new right-populist Conservative party that will be anti-immigrant, anti-abortion, anti-intellectual, anti-urban, anti-progress, and pro-gun.
