Injured good Samaritan ticketed for jaywalking

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090226/ap_on_fe_st/odd_good_samaritan_ticketed

A good Samaritan who helped push three people out of the path of a pickup truck before being struck and injured has gotten a strange reward for his good deed: A jaywalking ticket.

Family members said 58-year-old bus driver Jim Moffett and another man were helping two elderly women cross a busy Denver street in a snowstorm when he was hit Friday night.

Moffett suffered bleeding in the brain, broken bones, a dislocated shoulder and a possible ruptured spleen. He was in serious but stable condition Wednesday.

The Colorado State Patrol issued the citation. Trooper Ryan Sullivan said that despite Moffett's intentions, jaywalking contributed to the accident.

Isn't there any fucking common sense in this country anymore? The man saved 2 lives and he gets a ticket? :wtf: :banghead:

1. It seems harsh, but it also makes sense to give the ticket
If this guy was the bus driver, common sense should have kept him (and his passengers) from trying to cross there in the first place. Perhaps he could have dropped them off near a crosswalk...

That said, I hope the court tosses the ticket, on the grounds that he's been punished enough and has probably learned his lesson.

5. I'd bet good money that you'll hear more of these old tyme laws

coming back into effect. Cities and towns will look for ways to increase their budget any way they can.

I live/work/play in Cambridge MA, and I would really love to see some of the Harvard students get an education in what a "Don't walk" signal means.

3. It does seem harsh, but "helped save two lives"?
Edited on Thu Feb-26-09 12:55 PM by WI_DEM
according to the article the women were on the bus he drove and apparently he stopped and helped them across the street because of traffic:

Moffett had been driving his bus when the two women got off. In the interest of safety, he got out and, together with another passenger, helped the ladies cross.

My question is where did he stop? was there a safer place near a crosswalk where they could have crossed or did they all try crossing in a busy, snowy street?

4. Nailed 'Em!
This would be perfect for Colbert's new criminal justice segment, "Nailed 'Em!"

7. I'm guessing that the reason for the ticket

is a preemptive strike to make it more difficult for him to successfully sue the city for his injuries.

Edit: To change "he" to "him".
