Kerry on condiments, 2004, and Blago's hair
By PATRICK GAVIN | 2/26/09 4:36 AM EST

Q: Tell us your favorite joke.

A: On the advice of my attorney, my family and every member of my staff, I am no longer allowed to tell jokes.

Q: When’s the last time you used profanity?

A: Sh—, good question. Election Night 2004 comes to mind. Truth is, when I was a kid and my dad was stationed in Cold War Germany, even then the first foreign words I learned were swear words, so I’m embarrassed to say I have deep roots in this area.

snip//

Q: What’s a common and accepted practice for Americans nowadays that you think we’ll look back on with regret?

A: Up until this November, it was voting Republican.

Q: What is your favorite body part (on yourself) and why?

A: My face has been compared to New Hampshire’s “Old Man in the Mountain” (before it fell), and I’ve been called Lurch from “The Addams Family,” so there’s not a lot to choose from, but I’d have to go with my better-than-Rod-Blagojevich hair.

snip//

Q: On what types of products do you never go cheap, for the sake of quality?

A; Ketchup.

Q: Describe a few pet peeves of yours.

A: Beside 50,000 votes in Ohio? Probably people who don’t return phone calls. I try to always get back to people, and I tell my staff: Even if the answer is no, you’ve got to get back to people.

Q: How often do you Google yourself?

A: When I was growing up, the priests taught us to think that was a sin.

snip//

Q: Bonus Round: Who would win in a street fight, Pat Buchanan or John McLaughlin?

A: Trust me, we’d all be winners in that scenario.

10. excuse me - he is married to Teresa Heinz Kerry,
a brilliant, incredible woman. It is insulting to make the comment you did - hopefully without thought, especially after the RW attacks on both of these two good, decent people.

Momma T is one of my favorite people out there and she doesn't deserve this kind of treatment.

25. I have never met Momma T
but keep in mind that there are people in this thread that have personally met her and and her husband. They find her to be a brilliant, gracious, woman married to a man of integrity. Therefore, people are going to take exception to things (i.e. broadbrush smears) that are a disservice to them and their accomplishments.

26. I thought Kerry answering "ketchup" was funny
Edited on Thu Feb-26-09 08:00 PM by karynnj
- there was no additional "joke" in the post I replied to - no one needed an explanation as to why ketchup was funny and there is no other reason he would have said it. Instead the comment that Kerry married the Heinz fortune completely demeans both Kerrys - implying that Teresa herself without a fortune would not have interested Kerry and that Kerry married her for money. That the RW claimed both things, it is certainly not funny.

I did say in the post that I doubted you meant that.

27. Ahm, that company is doing well
And The Motley Fool site said that Heinz (HNZ) is one of 6 stocks to consider picking up.

I'd laugh about it too. It's doing better than Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and nearly as well as Campbell's Soup.

The media hid him as well as they could - rarely letting any unfiltered moments out.

18. Sooner or later
someone was going to post in this thread "Where was this Kerry back in 2004?" Never mind where were the Democrats? Where was the media? Blaming Kerry is the only option now still 4 1/2 years later. Go figure.

20. This was the same personality that he showed in 1971
His daughters in their convention speeches seem to have very similar senses of humor to what he showed here - especially Alexandra.

One sadness is that I think had he won, the country would have been pleasantly surprised at his self deprecating sense of humor and his genuine niceness (for lack of a better word). He is someone who doesn't hold grudges and would never have an enemies list. (Not that he wouldn't have enemies) Teresa would also have been seen for who she is.

28. I think the final number was around 59,000
I think it was around 120,000 the night of the election before the provisional ballots, which were in his favor, were counted.

17. Another, less funny, but very interesting example
Q: Think of one of your least favorite people in Washington and, without naming names, describe what makes that person so unappealing.

A: Disloyalty is the trait that burns me up.

It's actually a very good interview. Top quality fun + some other illuminating answers. Read the whole thing, it's well worth it.
