Where are your favorite places to ride a bike?

I'm intentionally posting this in GD because I think we could all benefit from discussing places we go to escape and what we get from it.

The backroads near Boone, NC. Not too much traffic, stunning scenery and a great challenge



Monterey Bay, just for the views



New River State Park, Virginia. Whenever I need to straighten out my head I head up there and just ponder things for a while.

4. We are in South Florida

Delray Beach to be precise, and finding someplace to ride is the key obstacle to us riding more. There just isn't anywhere to go. It's a rare event for me to miss the Maryland/Virginia area, but the instant I hop on my bike and try to decide where to ride, I do.

12. C'mon up to Palm Beach and ride the Bike Trail. You can start by

the Building of the Four Arts on Royal Palm Way, (just after you're over the bridge) and go all the way to the tip of the Island and take a gander at Singer Island. It's a great trip...

6. There are a TON more places to ride a bike in Monterey....

than just those with views of the bay.

Fort Ord and Toro regional park, for starters.

19. Monterey is ENORMOUSLY bike-friendly, too.

Many miles of bike paths and bike lanes along most city/county roads ... and exactly the right weather and facilities.

I'll vote for Monterey every time. :thumbsup:

9. In the vineyards on my mountain bike

We have 75 acres of wine grapes on our ranch in Oregon. Every season is its own unique experience. The trail around the vineyard is well groomed and usually covered with short grass. A loop around all the fields is about a six mile ride with nothing too steep and lots of wildlife to share it with.

10. Springwater Corridor

Another converted railroad right of way. Pretty level. Connects with other paths to make my daily commute a truly beautiful experience.

Also Highway 30 west of Portland out to Scappoose, St. Helens and Rainier. The highway is plenty wide, most motorists are aware of bicycles, and you can ride for miles without encountering a stop sign or red light.

14. Maine!

Maine is one of the most beautiful, pristine states in the country. The Eastern Trail is a fabulous biking experience with plenty of woods, marshes and natural beauty as well as opportunities to go off-train and visit towns along the way such as Old Orchard Beach.

We have some really nice hill country in the southern part of the state in the Arbuckle "Mountains".I took these in the Turner Falls area.

it's mostly flat, and streets are laid out in a grid, the traffic is tolerable, there's plenty of back streets, alleys and a parking garage or two.

30. I don't ride for scenery and a challenge.

I ride almost every day commuting to work. It's been 20 years since my biking has been for recreation.

My loss, I guess.

32. My work commute is rather unpleasant

A congested four-lane road with lots of exhaust to choke on and too many distracted drivers.

That's why I occasionally feel the need to get away to more pleasant environs.

31. I really dislike cycling

I don't own a car, and I cycle pretty much everywhere I go, but I can't imagine doing it for pleasure.

35. In Minneapolis. Seriously.

I know, I know, it snows 13 months out of the year etc. But the summers here are awesome, there is a huge trail system, and the bike community is very active. Also, Winter riding is not as bad as one might imagine; the right gear and the right bike make all the difference in the world.

(of course, as I write this mpls is in the midst of a blizzard...)

40. Makes me suspect that a lot of Resistance to cycling is based on mentality not physical reality

There are plenty of places with unpleasant weather where lots of people ride bikes a lot. Meanwhile there are cities where it's nice most days and yet people rely on cars.

Truly, I don't understand it.

So much singletrack in Bourne,Falmouth, Sandwich/ Barnstable- Orleans
And fabulous road biking, or scenic bike paths. Never gets old or tired.
