North Korea test launches a missile. US shoots down missile. North Korea invades South Korea.

1. They don't have to invade.

All they do is start shooting the tons of artillery aimed at Seoul.

3. North Korea is not a threat to anybody.

They know, very well, that if they do something violent to anybody that they'll disappear.

They don't have the resources to mount any kind of assault on anybody.

Nuclear and missile research just keeps people from doing anything to them like we did to Iraq.

4. They are a threat

They would rapidly lose an all out war against the US and South Korea, and they know it. But they could easily kill millions of people and do trillions in damage to South Korea and Japan before they lost.

They have thousands of pieces of artillery pointed at urban areas in South Korea, missiles that can reach Japan and a special forces unit of 100-200k soldiers who are trained to perform assassinations, terrorism and kidnappings in foreign countries. They'd lose a war but they'd do alot of damage before they did.

I'm not saying they aren't capable of projecting force regionally.

The threat of the total loss is why they're not something to be terribly worried about. They have no ability to sustain themselves. Not financially, they don't have the food, etc. If you have no hope of ending what you started, you generally don't start something unprovoked.

I'm assuming the North Korean missiles aren't broadcasting the signal that tells our vaunted "missile shield" exactly where they are, like the ones we've been testing it on. :eyes:

9. I don't read that as being the actual gist of the story....

It reads more like a standard response of a top military guy assuring the reporter that he is prepared to follow presidential orders, if given...not that he expects President Obama to actually give those orders.

I think the greater concern right now is with SoS Clinton's concerns about a power struggle within the Korean government over succession:
