President Bush will give three commencement addresses this year, including a speech in the congressional district of one of his fiercest war critics.

The White House announced Monday that Bush will speak on April 28 on the Kendall Campus of Miami Dade College in Miami, Fla.

His next address will be on May 11 at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. The president of the college, Jim Towey, is the former director of Bush's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.

The college is in the district represented by Rep. John Murtha, who has helped lead Democratic opposition to Bush's war strategy in Iraq.

how much stuff will happen between now and the speeches, and if the speeches happen what will he say and who will stay to listen?

2. I read that universities are being pushed to have GOPers as speakers
For the last several years very few if any non-GOPers being asked to speak.

BYU is having Cheney this year and the campus is all in an uproar.

He's living proof that anyone can grow up to be President.

10. he should not be allowed. If I were a student, I would protest it.
The very idea that he would take my graduation and try to turn it into just another political stump speech would really outrage me. And that's all he does.

When Clinton and Carter give speeches, they actually give stories, life lessons, nuggets of wisdom, etc. Not just a bunch of pathetic talking points that they use on $5000 a plate fundraisers.

13. Funny thing happened here at a graduation with Harold Ford, Jr.
He was scheduled to speak at the graduation of a local high school here in East Tennessee. Of course, with it being 2006 at the time, the righties went nuts saying he was just using it as a campaign speech and they cancelled on him. Well, the students decided they would protest by not taking part in their own graduation - soon thereafter he was back on the speakers list and gave a really good speech that had nothing to do with politics and more about life lessons and the hope of a brighter tommorrow.

(That being said, I'm not a big fan of Mr. Ford, but I'll give him credit where credit is due)

17. He'll probably drag Cheney along, so he can go "hunting" at the
Rolling Rock Country Club. You know Cheney and his "hunting" : blast away at caged birds. :eyes:

21. Just about the only college campuses I can think of that would take him
I've been out of college for a year now (just finished my MBA) and there were hardly any people chickenhawk enough to openly say they supported Bush. I can only imagine how much worse its become - at the time, the on-campus "Young Chickenhawks" were basically non-existant and rarely ever made any public appearances or posted any bulletins on the boards.

20. I just spoke to a freind who is a St. Vincent Alumnus.
He says a lot of alumni are contacting the school to protest having Bush speak there.

In his words - 'Having him speak at St. Vincent's doesn't seem very 'Benedictine' to me.'

I agree. But the head of the school used to work for Bush, so that's that, I think.
