6. It's one of the GUI desktop systems that fit over a basic Linux distribution.....
There's more than a couple of them -

GNOME, KDE, and ICEWM, and probably a dozen I haven't payed attention to.....

7. I ran KDE for a while on Ubuntu...worked fine.
I'm running HH on an older box and it just screams.

Looks great and it's more stable than anyone in my family.

9. Yeah
This an old Compaq 5310 US with a scant 256 MByte in memory. It was used principally as a Java development platform running Windows XP. For a long, long time it worked great. Then WindowsXP started just bogging down. I think Microsoft is intentionally bloating it.

In frustration, I ripped Windows off the box and installed Ubuntu. Using Eclipse for Java and C++ development. Listening to tunes while I compile ... etc. Works great again. Gonna max out its memory and I bet it will really rock.

I have an old Red Hat system running on a similar platform using Enlightenment as a window manager. That's really cool, but it just hasn't kept up and sound has never worked reliably.

10. "I think Microsoft is intentionally bloating it. " -- I'm not paranoid (even on the days they are
after me), but every time MS does one of their forced upgrades, something more goes haywire on my Compaq.

Since this last forced "improvement" there are no graphics in my e-mail (Outlook Express), just little red x boxes.

The "improvement" before that cost me my Paint application -- poof, just gone.

The "improvement" before that disappeared the Spider Solitaire game.

Maybe this is the "termite" approach to converting us to Vista?
Just corrode XP entirely from the inside?
I am not happy.
