Lots of dirt being moved around. Surprising amount of new construction going on.
I had occasion to be out and about today. I was quite surprised to see new construction just starting or early in the process. Since this is local, I can say for certain some these construction sites were not constructions last month. A few have been ongoing but seem to have accelerated of late.

I saw .....

A new budget hotel in a place where I never would have expected *any* hotel.

A new low rise professional office building.

A new restaurant (I know it will be a restaurant by its location .... no idea what the name will be (no signs).

New townhouses.

New single family houses (right next to the townhouses and both right next to a golf course.

Another new single family tract

A small strip mall next to another strip mall with two vacancies. Both would be looking for local businesses to rent ... no big boxes.

Again ..... all of this is new construction and most of it is recently started. Only the hotel is an older job that restarted.

I draw no conclusions from this, but I have to say it was encouraging just to see it.

1. Consider yourself fortunate...
All I've been seeing is more businesses boarded up and no new construction. :(

5. Don't know where you are
in Maryland Stinky, but I remember reading here or another place in the last few days that the Washington, D.C. area is one of the few still exhibiting healthy growth in the country.

7. Houses near me never stopped selling
unless they were on the main street and/or overpriced.

However, I do notice a couple of abandoned properties in my immediate area. I'm guessing someone died and no one has stepped up to take possession.

I no longer see housing construction here, a shame because there is a lack of affordable starter houses and a glut of yuppie barns that were built for out of state speculators.

I also see no commercial construction, not a shame considering the number of empty storefronts and offices in this town.

I also see little renovation going on, and that's a real shame. No one is bothering to line up in front of Home Depot in the morning any more, looking for day laborer work on construction sites. I hope they've found something else or gone home to their families in Mexico. This is a great time to do it if they've got anything saved up, the dollar is fetching about 15 pesos, a record high. They'll be able to start a small business with the most modest savings in dollars.

This town has just stopped dead in its tracks after years of overbuilding. It's just amazing how fast everything just sort of shut down.

8. I work for a General Contractor in Utah
I work for a GC in Northern Utah, we bid on jobs throughout the west. There has been a definite uptick in the last two weeks of new jobs that we will be bidding for the next few months.

9. With all the NEW building have they addressed filling up the old properties?
I don't know your area's needs but in MN., Developers overbuilt causing a glut of new houses on the market that do not sell, which IMHO contributed to the situation that we are in.

10. We've haven't seen a lot of decline in business here. We noticed
several projects were on hold last years during the credit crunch, but things have picked up. I deal with IT requirements in new buildings and retrofits, and there are a lot of things going on in this area. The Federal Gov, is really keeping this area booming.

who knew!

11. Somewhat encouraging here, too(Richmond VA) 90 mi south of DC.
We never had a huge slump here, although house prices did drop somewhat. There is new building on the west end and downtown and Sonny Nay, an electrician, hasn't been laid off anywhere yet except for a period of two weeks. I assume it's because we also are in DC's "orbit."
