Threat Is Real
The Nation: Growing Scandals And Abuses Force Impeachment Into Discussion

(The Nation) This column was written by John Nichols.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Former Republican Congressman Joe Scarborough had me on his MSNBC show Monday night to talk about impeachment. It was smart, civil discussion that treated the prospect of impeaching the president as a serious matter.

Scarborough took the lead in suggesting that Bush's biggest problem might be that Republicans in the House and Senate who — fearful of the threat Bush poses to their political survival — do not appear to be rallying 'round the president. The host's sentiments were echoed by two other guests, columnist Mike Barnicle and Salon's Joan Walsh.

The impetus for the show was Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel's ongoing discussion of the impeachment prospect — Hagel's not quite a supporter of sanctioning Bush, more a speculator about the prospect — and a new column by Robert Novak that suggests Bush has dwindling support within the congressional wing of the GOP.

- snip -

No, Scarborough is not jumping on the impeachment bandwagon.

He is simply treating the prospect seriously, as did CNN's Wolf Blitzer earlier in the day.

What I told Scarborough is what I have been saying in public forums for the past several weeks: We are nearing an impeachment moment. The Alberto Gonzales scandal, the under-covered but very real controversy involving abuses of the Patriot Act and the president's increasingly belligerent refusals to treat Congress as a co-equal branch of government are putting the discussion of presidential accountability onto the table from which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tried to remove it.

9. Impeachment growing from the public and Republican pols
worried about their careers (or even sincere concern for The Constitution.)

That's the way it has to be. It can't be from Pelosi, she can't initially push it because SHE is the one who will be acting president once Bush and Cheney are removed.

14. I doubt that would happen
I'd love to have President Pelosi, and then have her as the incumbent in 2008...

However, if impeachment was coming, it would likely be at least one of them resigning with an acceptable to both parties replacement among the few moderate Republicans out there.

Or any other Republican who gets "slipped" in there - where they'd have a jump start for the 2008 Presidential race.

It had better be Nancy Pelosi who takes over....

60. I can't quite agree. Bush led by Cheney is a horror - Cheney
taking over is run-away destruction of the U.S., because he is a run-away madman. The impeachment trial would have to be restarted. Of all the crimes against the country so far - lawyers would probably have to choose one. Does anyone know how Cheney could be pinned down to even one?

It appears he is involved with the lawyer firings. His communications person talked to the DOJ and we can assume that Cheney communicated with Rove - is there proof - is it an impeachable act?

Or are we going to prove that he sells stuff to Iran?
Can we prove that he ordered torture and the removal of Habeas Corpus?
Can we prove that he is getting payola from H-KBR-Blackwater or any of the other companies chosen to privatize war and more?
Will he go down for the leak?
Is some part of the Israel partnership going to take him down?

Wishes vs reality. Big distance to cover.

Maybe it's better to get him out of the black bunker and shine more light on him. Perhaps because of the short time left, he might commit a new impeachable crime right out of the gate.

He holds contempt for mere citizens and Democratic leaders - he probably holds contempt for Republicans who are worried about their future.

The Barons he works for don't care. Having two parties is the delusion. Control of everything is their goal.

61. Regardless of What is Acceptable,
you realize that under no circumstances will there be a President Pelosi. Once removal from office is looming, Cheney will resign and Bush will appoint a Gerald Ford figure to keep it in the party. Impeachment moves a lot more slowing than resignation and appointment.

thank you - from me, too!

Hey, guys, one of the most recent times I called Henry Waxman's office, locally, I got the MOST intriguing response. The young staffer answered my call and was, shall we say, rawther receptive. I said that I deeply appreciated ALL his investigative efforts at the moment, the tough questions, the smackdowns that shut up whiny republi-CON sore-losermen on his committee, and the subject matter he's exploring. She thanked me for the support.

Then, I said I wanted Waxman to keep it up, and build a case for IMPEACHMENT. She replied "that's what we're trying to do."

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I think we're reaching the "Goldwater Moment" - wherein there will be a handful of loyal Republicans, NOT "loyal bushies", who go to the White House to tell bush he's going to have to go for the good of the party and the country. AND for the party. And did I say they'd tell him it'd be for the sake of his party? They're realizing that they have WAY more to lose than he does, because one way or another, he'll be gone soon, but they, on the other hand, will want to keep their jobs and to stick around. He's proving to them conclusively, now, that he doesn't give a rat's ass about them. It's himself and his big-ass phony swaggering Texas strut and his male ego that he cares most about. He won't even admit he's made a mistake! And he's made THOUSANDS of mistakes. Any wonder he took THREE TEXAS OIL COMPANIES straight into bankruptcy when his rich backer/buddies gave him a chance in business? The GOP is gonna start talking, quietly, among themselves, that maybe the Goldwater Moment time is coming and they're going to need to figure out who gets that miserable job of breaking it to bush, and cheney too, and how everyone else saves face. And most important, how they can possibly salvage an even nominally-respectable showing next November. I wouldn't be surprised if they're talking about it, already.

The fact that they decided not to put up a fight in the Senate today is very telling. They ARE reading the poll numbers. This tells you they are getting DELUGED with emails and faxes and phone calls and letters and petitions from EVERYWHERE, telling them to get us OUT of Iraq. If they thought the people were with them, they'd be blocking this for all they're worth. Evidently they're realizing the people are NOT with them. This piece from The Nation is really significant. I think it's absolutely spot-on.

Keep visualizing...

We may get this arrogant, pig-headed asshole held accountable yet.

OTOH, it is happening faster than I thought it would.

Piss off a bunch of career Republican prosecutors and this is what you get: a very well documented bi-partisan outcry about a very Republican scandal.

That may be what is driving the republicans toward impeachment. The sight of career Republican civil servants being driven from their jobs for Bush's cronyism and corruption is ugly and shows how little he cares even for members of his own party.

Maybe the Republican party has found it's bottom.

...that if democrats moved to impeach, no matter how justified, the republicans would just screech and moan "they just want revenge for us impeaching Clinton!" I have hoped for years things would get bad enough for republicans to start impeachment proceedings. Somehow I'm both surprised that it took so long and surprised that it could happen at all.

18. Keep on sayin' it, because the more impeachment is discussed,
the closer it moves to becoming a reality!

I honestly believe that. It's the way things happen in this country. First you hear the complaints and at some point outright verbal attacks on a president who is doing wrong by the American populace, and then bit by bit the cry is picked up by more and more folks who are outraged at being lied to and having their wishes as free, voting citizens ignored.

And then the key words start to be mentioned -- words like "Watergate" and "crooks," as past similar events that transpired are recalled and compared to the present offenses. And then finally it rings out loudly all around us: "Impeachment"!

The more these words are spoken, the more citizens begin to accept the idea and stop resisting such actions being taken. Americans aren't stupid, but they are woefully ignorant -- which is not entirely their fault.

The more impeachment is discussed by voices that manage to be heard in the so-called "mainstream" media, the more it becomes inevitable.

That's how I see it, and I sure HOPE I'm right!

22. Pelosi may very well put impeachment back on the table.
Edited on Tue Mar-27-07 02:25 PM by meldroc
The reason why she said "Impeachment is off the table" is because she wanted to create the impression with voters that the Democratic Party is willing to be bipartisan - that they're willing to work with the Republicans, and she knew that if she tried an impeachment without Republican support, as seemed likely around election time last year, it would float like a lead balloon. She wanted to make it clear that rather than having such a bitter partisan pissing contest, she'll find other ways to restrain Bush's power.

Now times have changed.

Now we have Republicans like Hagel who are using the I-word, and the entire Congress, GOP included, is very angry at the White House. With Leahy, Conyers and others uncovering more and more corruption with the investigations, and Bush making that flagrant attempt to upsurp Congressional authority, calls for impeachment are becoming bipartisan.

There's that word, bipartisan. The reason why Pelosi said impeachment was off the table. Now that both parties are calling for impeachment, it won't take much to persuade Pelosi to put impeachment back on the table.

Very soon, the entire Bush administration will have a loaded gun pointed at its head (metaphorically speaking, Secret Service guys...)

Pelosi '07!!!

Edited on Tue Mar-27-07 02:47 PM by Fiendish Thingy
great news! It won't be long before the MSM starts their own polling on impeachment.

The even better news is that slowly but steadily, America is:
1)paying attention, and
2)considering the possibility, or at least the non-impossibility, of impeachment.
The narrative is changing...

Although most of us would have wanted impeachment proceedings to begin the day the Dem congress was inaugurated, the timing of how this is unfolding is beautiful, as it gives both the MSM and the public time to warm up to the idea of impeachment, for the Dems in Congress to build up the backbone, and for the Republicans to see the inevitability of their landslide defeats if they oppose impeachment...all while the steady parade of scandals, and their accompanying arrogant subversions of the law and the Constitution is etched in the collective American consciousness- finally!

One thought: all the scandals of late (past 2 weeks) attorney-gate, executive privilege, etc end up in the lap of Bush/Rove, which is good, but distracts from the multitude of Cheney's impeachable offenses.

Even those politicians who would lead the impeachment charge, would be reluctant to proceed if Cheney wasn't the first to go...

Any thoughts about what might bring the spotlight back onto Cheney? Joe and Valerie's civil suit?

I agree it's possible that Bush/Cheney might launch an attack on Iran as a distraction, but I think, at this point, even with the MSM's cheerleading complicity, such an attack would only make impeachment more likely.

You naysayers are in denial.

52. Congress is on break...
Edited on Tue Mar-27-07 11:32 PM by DAMANgoldberg
I agree it's possible that Bush/Cheney might launch an attack on Iran as a distraction, but I think, at this point, even with the MSM's cheerleading complicity, such an attack would only make impeachment more likely.

Spring Break, 1 April - 16 April. Ships are in position, alabi is on the Brits, here we go. April 11, 2007, it will happen.

58. Wouldn't surprise me. And Welcome to DU!
They're probably desperate enough to distract like this, on the paper-thin chance that they can pick such a fight with Iran that they'll get their next war - before time runs out on 'em, and thus, on the last hopes of the neoCONS to see their dream of world conquest and American Empire implemented. Problem is, bush has spent so much of his fabled "political capital" - squandered it like he does everything else of value - that perhaps by now, even this strategy won't work.

The post a bit higher up that mentions the change in the national narrative is also spot-on. GREAT observation and all true. Once it becomes acceptable to talk about, and no longer viewed as an absolute taboo, then it comes that much closer to becoming a reality. First, people have to be willing merely to entertain the thought. It can't be such a cast-in-stone no-no. We're now past that point. It IS a subject whose time has come and which is being recognized around the proverbial watercooler. And if some are talking about it, many more are thinking it. The more these scandals pile up, and the poll numbers slide, and the GOP gets more and more unnerved and fearful of '08, the more realistic and inevitable IMPEACHMENT will be.

We've come a LONG way, guys. The widespread "one dares not EVER question our king/savior/redeemer/commander-in-chief/anointed-by-GOD untouchable" attitude that used to dominate, coast-to-coast, is HISTORY. We won't be going back there again. At least not with this guy. We've seen too much. We've seen enough. We've had enough. We've had a belly full. And we're done. It's turned our stomachs, and our opinions. And once the public turns, the republi-CONS will become desperate enough that they'll do the heavy lifting. Which is fine. If they want to see the light, and this is how they think they can save face, I'm all for it. Whatever works. I still believe souls can be saved.

27. GW Bush has suffered the soft bigotry of low expectations for far too long.
If he were a Democrat, he would've been impeached years ago.

It's about time we stopped the soft bigotry of low expectations. What, is he some girly man that has to hide behind Trent Lott? No! So, let's stop misunderestimating him and impeach!

31. Even when abandoning their president, the Repugs still lie and dissemble
Edited on Tue Mar-27-07 03:27 PM by yardwork
This paragraph from the article is telling -

Novak wrote "The I-word (incompetence) is used by Republicans in describing the Bush administration generally. Several of them I talked to described a trifecta of incompetence: the Walter Reed hospital scandal, the FBI's misuse of the Patriot Act and the U.S. attorneys firing fiasco. 'We always have claimed that we were the party of better management,' one House leader told me. 'How can we claim that anymore?'"

These are not the three worst things that bushco has done. What about the invasion and occupation of Iraq based on lies? The non-response to 9/11 except to militarize the nation? The torture of detainees denied human rights? The non-response to Hurricane Katrina? Replacing scientific data with creationist nonsense? Hiding global warming while handing the country to the gas and oil industry? And, revealing the identity of an undercover CIA agent working on weapons of mass destruction, which Novakula conveniently forgets to mention wonder why...

No, the right-wing would rather throw W under the bus while retaining their hold on our nation.

edit - spelling

32. I've send this so many times here - it won't be the dems that start impeachment
It'll be the republicans. And if we play our cards right, don't force impeachment down their throats, trust me these repukes and especially the 21 republican senators up for re-election are going to jump ship.

We need 67 senators to get him out of office. If we don't get the republicans on our side then all we'll do is slap him on the hand

37. The Best Part
I think the best part of Scarborough's last show and Novak's column is that they're making it OK for republicans to be pissed at Bush. Once the mindless droves get affirmation that their suppressed feelings of betrayal and rage are legitimate, all hell may break loose on Bush and Cheney.

38. Impeach is a beautiful word
and comrade Little George is not keeping his Oath of Office to protect and defend the US Constitution. Little George says he is the Commander in Chief as if as Commander in Chief makes the decision as to whether or not we go to war. Equating Commander in Chief to a presidential right to decide if the USA goes to war is his biggest impeachable offense. It is Congress who calls our military in and out of Service not the Executive. Our founding fathers considered the Executive calling the country to war without Congress directing the Executive to bring our military to Service as an act of war against the states - treason - a very impeachable offense. The problem I see with really impeaching the President is there are so many members of Congress who are in the president's shoes by failing to keep their Oath of Office to peotect and defend the US Constitution. If beating the drums of impeachment stops an attack of Iran then impeachment noise would be worth its weight in gold. Article 6 of the US Constitution states the Constitution exists pursuant upon the Congress and Executive keeping their Oath of Office to protect and Defend the US Constitution. No Constitution- No Taxes, No salaries, No military - the power to rule reverts back to the people and we are in a state of Civil War.

62. yes, but...
...the practice of sending troops into action without a declaration of war is a long bipartisan tradition. it is common practice in u.s. foreign policy, the rule rather than the exception. in my view this is because debate in congress on the issues involved would mean exposing the real reasons for our plethora of invasions. the less the american people know about these reasons the better.

47. Visualize Impeachment
Visualize removal.

Visualize bush bumping his head as he climbs aboard the chopper to head for Andrews AFB then a 2 bedroom appartment in Midland (they ain't gonna let him keep the showpiece ranch they built for him in Crawford in 2000).

Visualize cheney's heart attack as soon as he receives the news that bush is resigning.

Visualize turdblossem working for guiliani

Visualize Pelosi's swearing-in ceremony...

Ah, what a great gettin' up mornin'

66. If * vetoes the Iraq War funding bill that schedules withdrawal...
Edited on Wed Mar-28-07 12:21 PM by EVDebs
...and Congress begins investigating the Cunningham/Wilkes/Foggo/CIA/GOP funding scandal, that the US Attny's scandal was set up to obstruct justice on and 'stonewall' Congress about...then you may end up with Repubicans heading everything off at the pass just as they did with Nixon and forcing his resignation. Trouble is they'd have to take Cheney with him and that's not gonna happen.

At that point you can pretty much bury the Republican party in the mire of corruption and incompetence forever. Not even rigged voting machines can save the GOP.

i think if Democrats don't get there on Iraq and other issues
then they should proceed with impeachment of the s.o.b simply
because he thinks he is the scab off the bosses ass instead of
working with congress he goes behind close doors and do things
his way which is wrong. :dem:
