Not that I don't want cures found for cancer and all the other diseases that ruin people's lives and kill them. Just that universal health care would mean earlier detection and treatment for more people.

More money for health education would also help -- PSAs on radio and tv, shown at movie theaters, in newspapers and magazines, etc.

It's a mistake to think that more money given to research will guarantee a cure. Cancer research is well-funded already. There are "orphan" diseases that affect many people and get very little of the research money pie.

I do care about cancer, lost my mother and one friend to it so far. My mother would have lived longer had her doctor listened to her when she told him her cough had changed. She had emphysema so he just blew her off for four months, kept telling her to lose weight and her emphysema would get better. She went in every month for four months, trying to convince him something different was wrong. FInally he did a chest X-ray and saw the inoperable cancer.

More money for research isn't going to do anything about idiot doctors who don't listen to their patients.

Funding for the National Cancer Institute had been going up steadily for a decade, but now President Bush wants to cut the funding for the second year in a row — this time by $40 million.

The newest cancer research may be especially threatened by these cuts. Money has always been tight. Even back in 2002, when the budget was growing, the government approved only one in five promising proposals for new research. Now only one in 10 is funded.

It's not only the research, but the researchers themselves that are affected. Some worry these cuts will have chilling effect on recruiting up-and-coming scientists.

23. May I tell you something that has me so pissed off right now?

I woke on Saturday morning to hear my husband having a huge fight with his mother (by phone) over her tireless and sickening support for the shrub. The man can do no wrong and it doesn't matter what evidence you put in front of her face, she disregards it. Why? Because she votes around one issue: abortion. Putting aside the argument that the shrub has accomplished very little in terms of limiting/denying women the right to choose, isn't it freaking illogical to vote to save lives, in theory, and in so voting ensuring the deaths of perhaps hundreds of thousands, and potentially denying hope to millions more? It BOGGLES my mind. Needless to say, the woman thinks she has God on her side. It makes me ill.

This is my first post to DU even though I have lurked for a long time. PA Democrat is absolutely correct. As a young cancer scientist, the future opportunities for me are bleak. The NIH budget was slashed 20% last year across the board. This cut applies to all funded NIH research - not just cancer research. The only way to get grants funded is to do what has already been done. New ideas won't get funded, simply because money is so tight that new ideas are too "risky". I have recently been giving serious thought to becoming an industry scientist. I have always been drawn to academia - the haven of new ideas and the freedom to follow my own lead. But, since funding is so bad, I have considered selling out. I have a family to feed!
