This story was buried by the US military for SIX DAYS. We did not know the truth during the SOTU Address. We did not know about it during the Petraeus confirmation hearing. We only find out about it after the close of the Friday news cycle.

He does not need to have direct authority to have influence over the decisions.

Especially if, there are other vested interests aligned in keeping this information concealed.
