Anyone remember Lee Atwater?
He was a rabid rightwing republican attack dog. The granddaddy to the Karl Roves of our time.

He died of a brain tumor and while on his death bed, admitted how dirty and wrong his tactics of attacking "the left" were and regretted ever having done it...

Prayers, hope for a recovery and long life for Tony Snow. Come to the good side my brother.

1. Yes but for all his distasteful sleaze politics, he didn't fancy himself some kind of grand
visionary of Republican politics as far as I'm aware, or try to be out front giving policy speeches.

He was a hatchet man, good at his job, who won an election for his guy (shrub sr.).

3. Yes, I remember him
It took brain cancer for LA to renounce his evil ways. I wonder what it would take for KR to fork over. Though, honestly, I sometimes wonder if he's not a sociopath. He seems to have a complete lack of conscience coupled with delusions of grandeur.

4. I have been thinking about his death bed conversion too...
It is hard not to wonder if Tony Snow will have regrets about his role in enabling such a corrupt, lying, criminal administration.... I wish Snow a miracle though, so that he could live a long future life, hopefully, making amends...

proteges, like Roger STONE, and the others whom I firmly believe were behind the Dan RATHER/CBS sabotage.

Roger STONE and his lovely (cough) wife Nikki in the pic. With Alex CASTELLANOS, another sleezebag. Roger was who developed the "family values" theme, for the Bob DOLE campaign. Yet in the middle of that campaign he was outed for frequenting swinging clubs and advertising for swinging couples. Tucker now frequently uses him as a sage pundit. What about George WILL who somehow had his hands on the CARTER debate strategy notebooks, but didn't turn them in the way the GORE campaign did. WILL, that insufferable holier-than-thou-prick, fully put them to use in the RAYGUN campaign. Sheesh!!1 what brought on this filth-memory-lane???!!1

6. Maybe, in the end, Atwater realized his humanity. Rove , Bush, et al? You have to have a ...
conscience for other people's suffering to bother you.

Apparantly they have none.

Cognitive dissonance?

18. Please understand that you do NOT want to be them on their deathbeds!
You will not have what they have on your conscience. That is your consolation. You don't want it either! Can you imagine going to your death with THAT on your conscience? What are the tortures you would experience?

You have peace of mind which is worth a fortune, if you just stop and think about it!

8. I remember some articles in Rolling Stone...
About Atwater and his band of merry men, during the Bush campaign. Lots of drinking, cocaine and strippers. Lots.

10. it was Ed Rollins he unloaded all that on. I have his autobio, and it's
compelling

he was almost a Rethug Zelig.

he was there with Atwater through his career. Atwater stabbed him in the back, effectively ending his close links with Poppy.

the book has a fantastic picture of him in a WH receiving line, with Barbara looking like she was going to literally bite his head off. She REALLY hated him for daring to ever work for another politico

he also worked for Ross Perot, then quit in frustration as his campaign manager.

the funniest stuff in the book is when he managed Michael Huffington's run for the senate. great snips in there about Arianna.

also, ABC news chief David Westin stole his hot wife...heh

14. Thanks, I have been trying to remember his name all day.
He has been on my mind in light of Snow's dx.

I hope Mr Snow can admit the evil he has done.
For himself. It is his soul on the line.

17. I doubt that he was sincere about it...Throughout history republicans have had
"attack dogs" to help them get elected because they could never run on the issues that Americans were concerned about ..so they attack,attack..As much as we hate Karl Rove, the Republicans certainly have other Atwater's and Rove's waiting in the wings to step in and continue the Republican style of politics.
