6. You don't want to see some of the crueler ones.
I looked and one was out of bounds in that it involved his son that passed away.

Around here (ultra-liberal Montgomery County - D.C. suburb) property tax on $6 million would run you about $60,000/year. A standard rancher in this area sells for $500,000 - property tax = $5000/year. Over $400/month in taxes to be allowed to live in your average house.

Mainly in malpractice suits against obstetricians where the children suffered birth defects, specifically cerebral palsy I believe. And he mostly took cases where the child had died. As a result, Edwards got very rich - enough to run for Senate - and is just about single-handedly responsible for a huge rise in C-section deliveries. Since his unsuccessful run in 2004 he's been on the payroll of UNC I think, running some kind of poverty study center.

Ever hear of Mount Vernon??? Monticello??? Maybe they should look at the back of a nickel.

Our founding fathers were not exactly poor beggers.

8. I believe that's exactly what the FR poster referred to. . .
a Southern manse built as a reflection of the occupant, given a name for recognition of its properties -- the "little mountain" of Monticello -- or as remembrance of an admired individual -- Admiral Edward Vernon, Washington's brother's commander in the British navy -- or, in the poster's sarcastic appellative, "Litigato," to signify where Edward's money was made.

14. Hey, There's Actually Dissent on FR. Who Knew?
You know, if the guy can afford this, I say go for it! "How big a house does a person need?" IMHO, need has nothing to do with it. That's like asking "How big a gun does a person need.?

I never begrudge a person anything they can afford to buy. How he earned his money, as long as it was legally earned, doesn't play into it as far as I'm concerned. I don't think there's a law against "ambulance chasing", however distasteful we might find it.

5. He's going to have a hard time with this on both sides even tho most of
the others are billionaires as well. I don't think Hillary is living in a 2 room walk up in NYC or Guillianni is looking between the pillow couches for change.
Most of the candidates on both sides are not exactly starving or worrying about rent. lol.

9. The timing of this just seems so bad.
Yes, I know he should be able to live wherever he wants however he wants, but to buy one of the most extravagant houses in the entire country on the political eve of an election where he hopes to run primarily on poverty....

Man... It's a PR nightmare whether it should be or not.

10. It's only a PR nightmare with idealogical extremists and puritans.
Most of America WANTS to be financially successful.

15. Of course they do, but I'm not sure how relevant the point is.
There's a difference between having financial success and living to excess.

But really I don't even care if John Edwards lives so extravagantly. My point was merely that his road to political success would be much smoother had he chosen to purchase a 1 million dollar house and spent the rest of this money on a foundation or some such.

This doesn't seem politically wise any way you slice it and I WANT him to have political success.

I hope it doesn't become that big a deal, it shouldn't become a big deal, and I'm almost certain it WILL become a big deal.

19. This is America. Nothing like this has impeded anyone's political success.
I don't think politically it amounts to anything.

11. I think the question we need to ask is:
HOW did he get what he has??

Can most Americans aspire to and achieve that if they want it?

17. I think it's a non-issue...
and it's only a small minority that cares. Knowing the RW nutjobs they'll try to make something of it, but I doubt most people will care all that much.

16. Don't know how this big house
will be viewed by those who agreed with Sen. Webb's words in response to Bush's State of The Union Address:

"When one looks at the health of our economy, it's almost as if we are living in two different countries. Some say that things have never been better. The stock market is at an all-time high, and so are corporate profits. But these benefits are not being fairly shared".

20. Freepers who live in grass huts shouldn't throw lawn mowers.
Who cares what the freepers are thinking or saying?

Let's throw their damn moron of a president out of office as soon as possible.

If impeachment is available, let's board that train. If not, let's all show up for our caucus and primary voting next winter and spring and rid the Oval Office of this failed and feeble-minded administration.
