Overheard at work: "Well, I ain't votin' for no Hussein Osama."

True story. Friendly middle aged lady who apparently heard about Obama's middle name somewhere. She was quite serious.

(Apologies if this has been declared "house/Edwards" night on DU.)

26. What does this woman say about people who live in Alabama?
What does that wacko woman say about people who live in ALABAMA?

So she doesn't like the name Obama? One of our 50 states has the name ALABAMA.

She appears a fool.

21. He'll surprise you on that
I was working in a pretty rural part of Illinois a few years back, when Obama was polling at about 1% in the Senate race there. I heard quite a bit of that same thing, over and over. In workplaces, in bars, in diners, and in DEMOCRATIC county party meetings. Thing is, when people heard him give a speech, or listened to a debate on the radio, or met him in person, all that immediately went away.

He knows how to connect with people, and he has a remarkable ability to hear people, not just talk to them. So people come away feeling they understood one another, regardless of the level of agreeance they shared. His name is only a liability when it's the only thing people know about him.

4. I HATE thatthis is a problem for Barack, but I'm afraid it's going to be
all through the campaign.

Because so many Americans are totally unaware of much outside of their own little circle, they don'trealize that somenamesin otherareas of the world are very much like Smith or Jones in the US.

I can only hope Obama canget the people who workwith him to figure out a jingle or funny clip that will make his name irrelivant to his abilities.

25. He has many palaces.
In all seriousness, It would be interesting to know how many people here on DU feel it's OK for elected officials to live in mansions, but not OK for foreign dictators to do the same. Take your pick: which is it?

14. My thought as well...
This is such a pathetic non-issue, repeated ad nauseum at DU. I'd best most who'd shiver in their bootsies about Obama's name are part of the 28 percent who are permanently delusional and still supporting ShrubCo.

Hearing that comment reminded me sharply of the power of negative advertising. Damn it.

19. Oh I agree it's negative advertising in a way...
I just think the tide has turned enough in the country that the impact is minimal and only realized in fairly dim political minds. Guess we'll find out soon enough! :hi:

20. " No Blacks, no Women" is the redneck anthem;
Fear not, the election is a long way off. when you throw mud it tends to stick and there will be lots of mud being thrown by both sides from now till then ( remember there is no clear cut Repub in in sight so far). I feel (hope), that Bush will be impeached within the next year, this will change the whole game . Dem's' will be in the white house for many years to come.
