I'm going to Iraq.
Looks like I'll be coming down on orders to deploy to Iraq sometime this year. I'm feeling pretty conflicted right about now:

On one hand, this is my job, what I've trained for 10 years to do. I'll be deploying with some of the finest people I have ever known, so it'll be a pleasure to serve in harm's way with them.

On the other hand...well, you know. Is there anything that a person posting on DU needs to say about the negative aspects of the war in Iraq?

So, I'll try to feed information back to you all throughout the entire process/deployment without violating any operational security. There is a possibility (probably more than a possibility) that DU will be banned on DoD nets over there, so if a couple of you want to give me your e-mail addresses, I can send updates, pictures, etc.

Anyways, my fellow DUers, it's a shitty time to have given up drinking. I could sure use a beer right about now.

Squatch is an adult and should be able to go anywhere on the internet where he wants. I just can't believe that the military would censor the internet for the people who fight for our country. It is absolutely horrible, but I'm sure Rush's website isn't blocked. Oh well.

Squatch I wish you make it back soon and safely. Thank you for your service.

129. Anyone who is serving their country you would think could
go anywhere on the internet they wanted. On a free country, that is.

I wonder if Free Republic is in a similar ban? They better be.

I appreciate that this is your job, but if it were up to me you wouldn't be going. And everyone else would be coming back.

I imagine my nephew will end up going, too...he just joined up this year and keeps getting moved around.

I'll think of you. And while I have no idea why you gave up drinking, I'm sure it was for the best. Peace.

15. Sir! No Sir!
http://www.sirnosir.com/

In the 1960’s an anti-war movement emerged that altered the course of history. This movement didn’t take place on college campuses, but in barracks and on aircraft carriers. It flourished in army stockades, navy brigs and in the dingy towns that surround military bases. It penetrated elite military colleges like West Point. And it spread throughout the battlefields of Vietnam. It was a movement no one expected, least of all those in it. Hundreds went to prison and thousands into exile. And by 1971 it had, in the words of one colonel, infested the entire armed services. Yet today few people know about the GI movement against the war in Vietnam.

The Vietnam War has been the subject of hundreds of films, both fiction and non-fiction, but this story–the story of the rebellion of thousands of American soldiers against the war–has never been told in film. This is certainly not for lack of evidence. By the Pentagon’s own figures, 503,926 “incidents of desertion” occurred between 1966 and 1971; officers were being “fragged”(killed with fragmentation grenades by their own troops) at an alarming rate; and by 1971 entire units were refusing to go into battle in unprecedented numbers. In the course of a few short years, over 100 underground newspapers were published by soldiers around the world; local and national antiwar GI organizations were joined by thousands; thousands more demonstrated against the war at every major base in the world in 1970 and 1971, including in Vietnam itself; stockades and federal prisons were filling up with soldiers jailed for their opposition to the war and the military.

Yet few today know of these history-changing events.

Sir! No Sir! will change all that. The film does four things: 1) Brings to life the history of the GI movement through the stories of those who were part of it; 2) Reveals the explosion of defiance that the movement gave birth to with never-before-seen archival material; 3) Explores the profound impact that movement had on the military and the war itself; and 4) The feature, 90 minute version, also tells the story of how and why the GI Movement has been erased from the public memory.

18. Thanks for your service--
Stay safe, by all means, and come back to your family soon. My nephew is an Army Ranger and was in Germany, doing God-knows-what on missions into Afghanistan. He can't or won't talk about it; he just went back home to Houston a few months ago. He had to have some surgery and the Army sent him back. He also has a new baby.

We'll all be thinking of you, and every other member of the military who is overseas doing the heavy lifting. Your commitment humbles me. You, sir, are the real deal--a hero.

Peace,

RV

I have to differ.

bush is the guy whom the evil cabal running the country put in place to do their dirty work, with cheney as the puppetmaster.

"Our generation" which could and should have learned from VN to say "never again" was asleep at the switch as this cancer grew and grew throughout the succeeding decades, tolerating the insertion of a washed-up actor as president, then the insertion of a dry drunk failed businessman. Many of us read "1984" in high school, were warned of the emergence of "Big Brother", and we have sat back and let it happen. We may have waited past the tipping point. The coming months will tell.

I'm far to cynical to give a flying fuck about serving my country('s mofo pos low iq politicians) It's a lot more fun to fuck the system up the ass than to be fucked up the ass by the system. ;)

Check this book out. Hopefully it'll help.

My many years in the Army have demonstrated that wherever confidence in NCO’s is lacking . . . you have . . . no really combat-worthy units.
Georgi K. Zhukov

If you don't know who Georgi Zhukov was, what does the US army teach you? How to be an inveterate ass kisser? I'm just cynical about the great infallible US army. ;) I certainly don't have much faith in the political leadership.

88. Interesting read from d-n-i.net, thanks, k&r
I don't know how much of "Operation David" is real, and how much is just there to make a point. This is the first I heard of it (maybe my fault), and I'm always a little skeptical.

Written by Austro-Hungarian Marines? If they'd done "Operation David" a century ago in Serbia, maybe Gavrilo Princip would not have shot the bullet that created the major war history of the twentieth century (and beyond). Zhukov was just cleaning up some of Princip's mess.

I'm guessing that the esteemed General Zhukov would not have been comfortable administering an "Operation David" when he arrived in Berlin. "Operation Goliath" would be too wimpy for the good general. Of course, when 20 million or so of your countrymen have been killed, "mercy" is not high on your list of virtues.

Anyway, I highly K&R your link to the d-n-i.net article.

(and you're right. History of Germany's Eastern Front in WW2 is not widely taught by the US Army to the troops. Probably only to officers at War College or the Military Academies)

Stay safe! This family will also be thinking of you and praying for your safety and successful mission so that you return home to your family.

My son is also due to go back to Iraq later this year. While we sincerely keep hoping something will change and none of you will have to do this, we know that is unrealistic. The best we can do for him, for you and all our soldiers is to make sure you know how much we appreciate your service to us and to our country and to support what you need to do your job.

91. What a horrible thing to say at a horrible time.
You do not speak for most of us here. Just because the leadership is wrong doesn't mean the soldiers are wrong to serve their nation as best they can.

If a soldier is a tool for fascism, then really, aren't we all, even the protestors? The fascist overlords use the protestors to rally their own base and make everyone feel like they need the stability of fascism. So, why attack a soldier for doing his work overtly?

104. Hard sometimes to seperate the tools from the master
I hope all involved do as little harm as possible and also with there were a way for all to be able to stand in solidarity and say "hell no" without incuring legal repercussions. It can be difficult to seperate the tools from the weilders. For those saying bad things towards Postman, please recognize this. Also that he/she has expressed the same wishes towards Squatch's personal safety that most of us have.

This is a community here, and part of "community" where I come from, anyhow, is we help each other out in times of need. What can we DUers do for you and yours?

Is it a matter of sending emails of support to you over there?

Is it a matter of sending "care packages" to you and your guys?

Does your wife need some moral support?

Please be thinking about what we can do for YOU if you have to go--OK?

Just ask a recruiter, who will rarely mention "war."

I think objecting to a particular war, is especially conscientious?
Here is a good read by Kevin Benderman, a brave objector to the Iraq war.

If you sign up and whine that your recruiter didnt mention "war" you need to get your head checked. I also dont like the use of the word "brave" for objectors and deserters, "smart", maybe, "full of conviction" yes, brave, no.

142. Don't let them try and make you wear a red shirt like this guy.
If all the other guys are in blue and yellow uniforms, and you beam down with a red one on, you may be in for trouble...

hehe ;)

But seriously bro, my heart goes out to you, man. It's not a fun choice to make. I will respect you very, very much if you choose to go. I may respect you a tiny bit more if you took a stand and decided to fight against the deployment based on your principles. Either way, I will focus good energy on you and pray for a happy outcome for my DU brother, my countryman, "Sergeant Squatch".

149. OOO-rah, bro.
My war was over 30 years ago, but the basics remain the same. Keep your head down ... unless one of your buddies is in trouble. Squatch, you'll be in my prayers.
