Fireball: Pieces of a Russian satellite narrowly miss hitting a jet.

Several years ago I saw a ball of fire sailing horizontally across the night sky. I thought it was a plane on fire and that I would hear a massive crash in moments. But it zipped on past what part of the sky I could see from my window (I was in mid-room, and kinda froze in place as I saw the fireball fly past) and there was zero noise.

My mother was with me, and we both expected sirens, something, but there was nothing. I called police; they had no other reports. I called the local planetarium. They had no info on anything unusual in the sky. I don't know how that could be -- it looked huge, like a low-flying plane but round not long like a plane, and it was bright with raging flames.

Anybody else ever see anything like that?

(edited to fix spelling in headline)

2. You probably saw a meteor on its way to becoming a meteorite.

3. Yes
I saw some Russian space junk come down in the seventies. Then again, news reports SAID it was Russian space junk; could have been our own (sorry, a little older, a little more jaded).

4. What I saw happened in the '70s too...
What befuddled me was that it flew in a straight, fast line across the sky -- not up, not down.

6. What was it's heading?

The one I saw flew north to south, in a perfectly straight line across the sky. No arc, no drop due to gravity. It was not falling or skipping off the atmosphere, it was moving with thrust.

Note that rockets are generally launched in the same direction as the Earth's spin. If the Russians had launched a rocket southerly over the US there'd be hell to pay, especially in the 70's and 80's.

5. Yes, I saw what they claimed was a Russian booster coming down over the US
during the cold war, officials later claimed was a domestic military test.

Believe me, what I saw was NOT flaming space junk. The tail was obviously thrust, not smoke, and the head consisted of many dancing balls of multicolored light that moved like electrons around an atom. There were also trailing lights that didn't move relative to the leading lights, all the lights were connected as one unit.

It was the first time I realized that our government always chooses to reflexively lie to us instead of simply telling the truth.
