Is the captured woman British sailor, Faye Turney, the new Jessica Lynch?
Perhaps I'm cynical, but this just hit my BS meter when I heard about it.

Just hours before she was captured, she was interviewed for television. The gist of the interview was that she was doing what she was doing to provide for her little 3 year old daughter.

Sailor captured by Iranians 'under no illusion on risk of Gulf mission'

A YOUNG mother who is among 15 sailors being held by the Iranians stoically played down the dangers of her mission in an interview only hours before she was seized at gunpoint in the Persian Gulf.

Leading Seaman Faye Turney, the sole woman held captive by Iran's Revolutionary Guards, had told the BBC last week she was under no illusion about the risks.

"Sometimes you may be called upon, and, when you do, you've just got to deal with it and get on with it," she said.

"My parents made sure I was under no illusion that I could and can go to war at any time and that's the choice I made," the 26-year-old said.

Television footage shows LS Turney in uniform and travelling in a rigid inflatable boat.

Her family described the capture as a "very distressing time". Her husband Adam, who is also a Navy seaman, has been given special leave to return home to care for the couple's three-year-old daughter, Molly

1. At least the dad gets to go home
Do you think Bush would allow this? I fear he would insist that the spouse stay in theater.

2. Has anyone tried to portray her as
heroically fighting off the "enemy"? No? This is nothing even remotely like the Jessica Lynch story.

Critical thinking is your friend.

4. When I referenced Jessica Lynch, I was referring to the fact that she became a poster
girl for the war. I do not compare the details and especially the details behind the lies of the Lynch story, but she would have been a poster child nonetheless. Captured beautiful young woman. I just cannot get over the coincidence that this young woman, Faye Turney was interviewed with such a soul grabbing story, just hours before her capture.

9. anyone who thinks there is going to be an
attack on Iran because of this, simply isn't dwelling in reality. bushco may attack Iran (though I seriously doubt it), but it won't be over this.

I can see you're not a fan of Occam's razor.

11. This happened in '04 too.
According to the tinfoilers, WAR with IRAN was the goal back then, too.

8. But in our society, it doesn't matter. The young blonde damsel in distress or gone bad brings
attention and I believe that this might be used to further villify the Iranians.

This administration wanted war with Iran at the same time they wanted war with Iraq. Iraq was the first target and it is in PNAC.

12. Only it has been made to matter because she will get to leave
because the Iranians were concerned over propriety of her being stuck with the rest of the men like that. At least, that is what I heard on tV this morning, CNN, I think.

it's meaningless.

14. Isn't it a violation of the Geneva Conventions
to show the prisoners on TV? Oh,I forgot we don't follow the rules of the Geneva Conventions so why should they.

19. There isn't
any reason for the Iranians not to keep them alive and in good health. It's just political posturing - just like the Chinese did when they seized the downed spy-plane. This is state vs state maneuvering not state vs suspected terrorist (as in Gitmo, extraording renditions etc) or terrorist vs state (as in kidnappings by insurgents in Iraq etc).

22. I was only saying
that in some sense that part of the Conventions is too restrictive. It helps to be able to see the prisoners. Think if we had more, independent images of prisoners in Gitmo and elsewhere, it would severely hamper the secrecy and perhaps even the torture (if they knew their victims would be on camera).

18. I think it's a set-up too.
Another example is the terror raids that took place a few months ago in the UK - tabloid journalists were told the night before to get their reporters on the ground in the relevant city (even before the police had even carried out their dawn raids).

I think this is just another version of that (although in this case I don't think the journalists or individual sailors were aware of the situation they were being dropped into).

20. Any evidence that this is a set up?
And in what way is it a set up? Precisely how did they set it up? More tinfoil speculation- about as useful as a well used kleenex.

21. Was there any evidence for WMD?
I've been reading up on B*sh and Blair for 5 years since 9/11. I've seen how stories change...

"No one could have imagined planes used as weapons"
"No war plans on my desk"
"We know where the WMD are"
Downing Street Memos
Jessica Lynch
Pat Tillman
Abu Ghraib
Extraordinary renditions
Abramoffgate
Plamegate
NSAGate
Katrina (no one could'vei magined the levees would fail)
Operation Swarmer
Forestgate Shooting
Stockwell Tube shooting (Menenzez)
USAgate

etc etc.

So, yes, it's just speculation. But speculation based on a number of different news stories and also my instinct for how these news stories pan out in the months and years ahead. It's called connecting the dots. Sometimes we get it wrong here on DU but that's what this messageboard is for. Otherwise we might as well just take the MSM blatherings at face value and not speculate.

23. The timing of the whole capture is curious
but I don't think this woman is being 'Lynched'. It's too late to turn sentiment around anyway, especially in Britain.

What I would love to see though is someone in the MSM point out that this carrier group has been in the Persian Gulf for months. They didn't just show up when the capture happened to give a 'show of force'.
