Gonzales and Whitaker were in Chicago on Tuesday for a forum on sexual predators. At the federal courthouse in Des Moines, Whitaker talked Wednesday morning about his meeting with Gonzales and what he believes is the truth behind the controversial firings.
Whitaker was appointed U.S. attorney by President George W. Bush in 2004. Whitaker said the position is not something he envisioned. "I could barely tell you what a U.S. attorney was a year before I became the U.S. attorney. I didn't have a real clear knowledge of what the position involved," he said.

. Critics said that indictment and a former Des Moines City Councilman being charged in a job-agency scandal is Whitaker's way of pushing a political agenda.
"I would say that's absolutely false, and we're just going where the facts go. And we don't target people based on their political affiliation. We don't have any. There's no law that says if you're of a certain party, you're guilty of a crime. That's just not how the statutes are written," Whitaker said.
