BEIJING (AFP) - A stubborn Chinese homeowner has become a national cause celebre for holding up a major property development in southwest China in a three-year battle to protect her house.

"I'm not stubborn or unruly, I'm just trying to protect my personal rights as a citizen. I will continue to the end," Wu was quoted as saying in the state-run Legal Daily on Friday.

After accepting compensation offers from the builders of the planned residential complex, 280 households have moved out.

But Wu, who now lives elsewhere due to difficulty accessing her home, has not budged even as bulldozers excavated the site around her.

1. If a few Americans had done something like this we wouldn't
be in the war-obsessed financial misery we're in now.

4. Someone in my city did that, but holding out for more money ...
A hospital wanted to build a specialty unit across the street from it. The homeowner, located by the corner of the street, waited until everyone else signed on, then demanded a much larger value.

They said 'screw him' and built around him. He can't give his place away now, the greedy jerk.

6. Gamble
It can be a gamble for sure. This couple is essentially doing the same thing; However, they seek replacement area in the new development, as opposed to monetary compensation.

5. They turned down the offer
The couple refused initial offers, as they feel it isn't adequate compensation. The couple are seeking an equal amount of area in the new development. If they can hold-out long enough, I have a feeling that the couple may get close to what they are requesting.
