A core group of DUers has always been quick to mobilize when activism was called for. Well, friends...it's been called for again.
The military members of Canada, one of our last remaining allies following the bridge-burning era of bush2, was just unspeakably demeaned by the republic party cheerleaders at FauxNews.
Many of you have
seen the video here at DU already. If you haven't, you really should.
Now I ask you to recall
Moveon.org's ad in the New York Times featuring General Petraeus, and you will no doubt also remember that the republics forced votes condemning the ad and supporting Petraeus in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. In these votes
many Democrats voted with the republics to condemn Moveon.org's ad.
WASHINGTON - The House on Wednesday overwhelmingly voted to condemn the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org for a recent advertisement attacking the top U.S. general in Iraq.
By a 341-79 vote, the House passed a resolution praising the patriotism of Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, and condemning a MoveOn.org ad that referred to Petraeus as "General Betray Us."
The liberal group's full-page ad appeared earlier this month in The New York Times and has served as a rallying point for Republicans. President Bush called the ad "disgusting" and criticized Democrats such as Sen. Hillary Clinton, the front-runner for the party's nomination, for being afraid of irritating the group.
"Such unwarranted attacks should be strongly condemned by Republicans and Democrats alike," said Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Calif., during brief debate on the resolution.
The resolution was attached to a stopgap measure funding Cabinet budgets until mid-November.
Wisconsin Rep. David Obey, a veteran Democrat, recounted how he left the Republican Party during the era of Sen. Joseph McCarthy, R-Wis., and said that lawmakers have an obligation to criticize their allies as well as their enemies when they go too far.
"I've got an obligation to be equally upset when that kind of juvenile debate emanates from the left," Obey said.
My challenge to you is to do as I have done today and
contact your representatives and let them know just how vehemently you oppose this unwarranted and despicable FOXNews depiction of our valiant and steadfast allies north of the border.
Perhaps they will then do the right thing and hold a vote condemning FOXNews as quickly as they turned on and attacked Moveon.org.
We can do no less for our Canadian friends, some of whom are right here in DU with us...and to them let me say publicly right now I'm sorry you were subjected to this attack by the moronic right-wing cheerleaders at FAUXNews. Please believe me when I say they
do not speak for us.
