Town Decides Not to Ban "N-Word"
There's been a lot of talk ever since the mayor of Brazoria County wanted to fine people for using a racial slur.
That slur was the "N-word" and he wanted it outlawed. Violators could face a $500 fine, but his proposal faced a lot of opposition at a public meeting.

Mayor Ken Corley came up with the idea of banning the word and fining those who use it $500.

He found out quickly not many agree with him.

1. Non-lawyers think they can legislate ANYTHING.
You can't legislate against the N-word.

This is a very important Constitutional priniciple called PRIOR RESTRAINT.
It's NOT allowed.

But that mayor is not a lawyer, so he thinks he can legislate language, morality, etc.

2. prior restraint isn't really the issue here

since the proposal wasn't focused on publishing the n-word or somehow preventing it from being spoken, but rather proposed to impose a fine on those who said the n-word. There is another very important constitutional principle in play here, regarding the freedom of speech ...

3. As much as I would love to never hear it again
legislating against it would
a. not keep people from saying it
b. eventually create a free speech court battle.
