The headline:

45 Million Cards Hit In TJX Security Breach. "the biggest card heist ever."

This has been going on since December 2002. They delayed announcing to the public.

By Dec. 21, those investigators determined that the computer systems had been breached and that an intruder remained on the systems.

How much bigger is this going to get? With 45 million card hit a suspect a lot of the readers on DU have been affected by this "security breach" that could also be labeled a fraud.

The question that most often comes to my mind is shall I use cash to deal with stores as they have not earned my trust.

1. Retailer TJX says computer breach involved 45.7 million credit, debit card numbers
Source: AP

BOSTON: At least 45.7 million credit and debit card numbers of TJX Cos. customers were stolen from the discount retailer's computer system over several years, according to a regulatory filing by the company, which has stores in North America and Europe.

The filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission gave the first detailed account of the breach that the company initially disclosed in January.

It also said another 455,000 customers who returned merchandise without receipts had their personal data stolen, including driver's license numbers.

TJX operates T.K. Maxx in Ireland and Britain; Winners and HomeSense in Canada; and Marshall's, T.J. Maxx, among other chains, in the U.S.

6. If you charged something there, you're at risk.
It doesn't matter whether you returned something or not.

My credit card company has already closed my account and sent me a new card.

13. Better call your credit card company. They'll probably want to
close that account and give you another one.

8. Why aren't companies that deal with cards required to carry insurance. . .
as a protection for us all should our numbers be stolen. The insurance companies themselves would insist on better controls, as they won't want to pay out. As it is, there's no financial incentive for these companies to protect our info. For them, it's a simple "oops, our bad. . . good luck with whatever you have to do to rectify the mess we've made of your life." Then they move on, and the public soon forgets they catastrophe they created for so many, and the cycle is set in motion again.

Let's put some financial incentives in place to make protecting our information pay for these incompetent corpos. If they were just required to notify everyone whose info was at risk, it'd be a tremendous hit -- over $10 million in postage and paper alone for THX for these 45 million victims.

If they won't take measures to protect us, measures should be taken to unmercifully compromise them -- make it so a company couldn't do business without making certain they protect their customers. Only then will we all be able to sleep nights.

9. There you go, shut down small businesses and stop new ones
Besides, the credit card companies require disclosure of all illegal card related data access already, and liability insurance is already available for any business as large as the one that lost all the data.

My request is that you not go on a crusade that will add more barriers to entry for small businesses. It's tough enough being self-employed without being punished for the errors of major multinational corporations.

10. Since 2005, a minimum of 104,073,351 data breaches have occurred. . .
and that doesn't include this incident! And for a substantial number of incidents there is no idea how many records were compromised -- and these are small businesses as well as large.

If a business can't operate in a manner consistent with the public's interest, then maybe they should have no claim to use of methods they can't be responsible enough to use properly.

11. F ing Corporations. Fing Corporations. F ing Corporations. They
are outsourcing or insourcing our jobs and stealing our money one way or another. Capitalism not regulated is a disaster for the ordinary person.

12. What is the answer
I can only see more of this happening as the jobs are sent overseas and people in this country become more desperate. In the news I see more bank robberies than has been happening for many years.

These are the benefits of downsizing with the exception that the robbers are not choosing the 1% at the top where ALL the money actually is. The robbers are choosing to rob from people who shop at discount stores and those are the people who can't afford "the best."

I wish I had the answer of how the corporations can be held to account for the injury caused by their negligence in allowing the credit information to be fraudently used.

I think they caught someone in Florida using the credit card numbers to purchase millions of dollars worth of items.
