Defying Bush, Senate Passes Iraq Spending Measure
Issuing a stinging challenge to President Bush, the Senate on Thursday approved a spending measure that provided more than $97.5 billion for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan but ordered troop withdrawals from Iraq to begin within 120 days and set a goal of removing most armed forces within a year.

Democrats, preparing for a veto fight, immediately sought to paint the president as obstinate in the face of broad public sentiment against the war. They said he would be the one abandoning American forces should he reject a final bill that lawmakers expected to produce in a few weeks.

“If the president vetoes this bill, it is an asterisk in history,” said Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, after a vote of 51 to 47 on the measure. “He sets the record for undermining the troops more than any president we have ever had.”

But Mr. Bush was not wavering. He stood on the North Portico of the White House, flanked by Republican House leaders, and delivered his veto threat one more time.

“We stand united in saying loud and clear that when we’ve got a troop in harm’s way, we expect that troop to be fully funded,” he said. “And we’ve got commanders making tough decisions on the ground, we expect there to be no strings on our commanders. And that we expect the Congress to be wise about how they spend the people’s money.”

1. What's this "we" chimp-man
There he goes with his royal "we" again. If he vetoes it, then what? No funding, right? A precipitous pullout. End of our involvement. Sounds good to me.

2. Is there no Bush timeline whatsoever?

Hasn't it been suggested kind-of, sort-of, maybe the pResident will start bringing them home before the '08 election?

I was just wondering how far apart we are on the dates: is it sometime between Apr-Sep '08 and never? or is it Apr-Sep '08 and sometime 10 years from now? or Apr-Sep '08 and Oct '08?

3. Its been suggested that his handlers haven't made a choice on when to
return the chimp to the zoo.

Seriously, this is all in the hands of business elites. And they are clearly clueless.

4. There was some under-secretary of Defense who said it's going to be "over"

in time for the election, whatever over means.

It would be good to know how many months apart we are, so when the heat begins over the veto, we can translate the time difference into n lives difference between our proposal and his.

How many lives are we talking about on average per month?

3245 / 36 months = 90.1 per month

wounded? Is it roughly 1,000 per month wounded?
