That's the thing about social progress; it's almost impossible to turn it back
The Iowa court decision isn't just about one state. It's about the future. For years I've had no doubt that marriage equality is inevitable, and even such things as stupid state referendums and prop 8, didn't sway me from that view. And what's more, I think it will happen a lot more quickly than most imagine. The dams are breaking.

Governor Douglas may well be able to veto marriage equality in Vermont- for now, but with huge majorities in the VT Senate and House, it won't be over. The minute we get a dem governor, and I think that'll be next year, the legislation will go through again, and the new gov will sign it.

In other states, the fight isn't dying, it's getting stronger. The opposition is getting weaker as a new generation and the one following it, shrug off the reflexive narrow perspectives of older generations.

We're gonna get there. And it'll be sooner than you think.

1. Frequently,
social progress involves court cases that are kind of like road signs, marking the way.

This one makes it clear that we are closer to our destination. Not there yet, but closer.

2. Yep. Sometimes it's three steps forward-two steps back.
But, the momentum is building and won't be stopped.

3. I am surprised that the RW hasn't proposed getting the state
(as a general term) out of the business of marriage.
Frankly I don't care what adult marries what adult or for that matter if they marry many. As long as they don't spread disease and pay their own way.

7. Oh, the wingers have been saying that for a long time.
Personally, I'd rather get the church out of marriage, which is an institution designed to provide certain additional rights to married couples than to individual citizens.

The church, in this country, has nothing to do with such rights. Since even a couple who are atheists can get legally married here, without any "minister" involved, marriage is a civil institution, not a religious one.

Get the church out of individual rights. It has no business there.
