A young Rove in 1972 CBS news video:
A nostalgic look back at respectable journalism, the Committee to Re-Elect the President, and a young architect in the making ...

(check out the bumper sticker Generation Of Peace

from the article:

In the fall of 1970, Karl Rove, current Bush Administration Deputy Chief of Staff, used a false identity to enter the campaign office of Alan J. Dixon, who was running for Illinois State Treasurer, and stole 1000 sheets of paper with campaign letterhead. Rove then printed fake campaign rally fliers promising "free beer, free food, girls and a good time for nothing," and distributed them at rock concerts and homeless shelters, with the effect of disrupting Dixon's rally (Dixon eventually won the election). Rove's role would not become publicly known until August 1973. Rove told the Dallas Morning News in 1999, "It was a youthful prank at the age of 19 and I regret it."

Rove has done more to destroy idealism than any single person.

7. He regretted getting caught.

It made him realize he needed to be much sneakier and build in several layers of deniability.

Say...why wasn't that fine young patriot fighting for freedom over in Vietnam?

9. This is pure Gold! Thanks for this!!
What sort of home would spawn such a creature as Rove. He actually looked fairly normal, but his mind was already sociopathic. I would love to read a REAL biography of this guy and what sort of family life he came out of - probably very similar to Dahmer's I would think.

10. Creepy Flashbacks...In More Than One Way
Note the date on the video: January '72...before the Watergate break-in, but a snapshot (especially with Magruder) of the "CREEP" in action. Rather, nor none of us, knew that a year later we'd be seeing a power grab by Nixon...nor that the "seeds" of the booosh regime were also firmly in place. The shadow party was already in place and I'll bet Norquist and other "merry pranksters" were also on board.

It was creepy in how prophetic many parts were...especially the use of computers and direct mail in raising campaign cash for Repugnicans and the "black ops" operation. This was almost a decade ahead of the first PCs and the donor list must have filled dozens of punch card boxes.

The '72 election was fascinating as McGovern drew the most youth-oriented and progressive campaign/platform in my life...and was opposed by elements that we can see spent as much, if not more, of their lives in working in the opposite direction.

11. I know I would have never thought to do that at 19.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I played youthful pranks.

Short sheeted beds. Saran Wrap on toilet seats. Shaving cream on door handles. Those are pranks.

Never once did I say to my friends, "Hey! Let's go knock over a political office, steal paper and stage a fake rally. It'll be really cool!"

What a loser. That is a criminal mind at work for sure.

23. Rove was a protege of Watergate ratfucker Donald Segretti.
Leaves College for position in the College Republicans

In June 1971, Rove dropped out of college to take a paid position as the Executive Director of the College Republican National Committee. Joe Abate, who was National Chairman of the College Republicans at the time, became a mentor to Rove.

Rove traveled extensively, participating as an instructor at weekend seminars for campus conservatives across the country. He was an active participant in Richard Nixon's 1972 Presidential campaign. As a protégé of Donald Segretti (later convicted as a Watergate conspirator), Rove "paints (Nixon opponent George) McGovern as "left-wing peacenik", in spite of McGovern's World War II stint piloting a B-24."
