Dr. James Dobson demanded Fred Thompson express Christian faith
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 07:31 AM by Squatch
The sad thing is that Dobson and other religious leaders have enough pull with their followers that they can influence political elections on pseudo-religious arguments. When a candidate is vetted before the American people on election day, you would hope that his or her potential as a leader of a very diverse nation would far outweigh his or her personal (and private) religous beliefs.

In any case, don't misconstrue this post as sympathy for Conservative candidates, just a opinion on the influence of religion in our society where religious freedom (and freedom from religion) is among our most cherished rights.

A Thompson spokesman quickly contested Dobson's statement, saying "Thompson is indeed a Christian. He was baptized into the Church of Christ."

But a declaration of Thompson's religion will not be enough for Dobson, who is viewed as being widely influential with evangelical Christians, a key Republican voting bloc.

5. I'm betting a kangaroo. This creep is a serious perv.
Some day a candidate is going to tell these self-righteous petty tyrants to FOAD. That will be a good day.

16. Well, was it wagging its tail?
Old joke.

"Dobson is certifiable."

And that makes him different than the other creeps?

4. What would win elections is someone saying something like this:
"I don't need some televangelist riding in a Gulfstream V and wearing a $5,000 suit questioning my spirituality. If Mr. Dobson thinks he has some special hotline to the Almighty that tells him who is a 'good' christian and who is a 'bad' christian, then I think he needs some professional help."

Although I believe Barry Goldwater had some more choice words for these freaks, which I cannot locate.

(btw, Thompson is an idiot regardless of the state of his Madrassa training)

12. I believe ...

I believe that John McCain did just about that in 2000 and he was taken down for it. This time around he's kissing their asses.

6. Dobson Is Our Friend...
He's all but thrown his chits behind the Gnewster...one Repugnican I would love to see on the ballot next year. He's the most beatable of a list of real sad sacks and the most divisive...especially for Repugnicans. I have predicted for a while that Gnewtie was positioning himself as the "true CONservative" and this could lead to the rupturing of what's left of the Repugnican party. Dobson wants to stay a player and Gnewtie knows Dobson's listeners (this dude is on everywhere) are a base for both votes and cash. The religious right feels left out and thinks the GOOP owes it big time...and Dobson has taken it upon himself to make sure that IOU is cashed next year. The fun begins when Gnewtie doesn't get the groundswell of support he thinks he has and falls out with the rest of the party. If there's anyone currently likely to bolt into third party land, it's both Dobson & Gingrich....and that all but ensures a Democrat elected to the White House.

8. Thompson's spokesman's response was WRONG
It should have been, this is the land of the free, not the land of focus on the family. dobson should step forward on live TV and tell every American that he will demand every presidential candidate take a litmus test based on their religious beliefs. That is not American, that is not what the founding fathers intended. If dobson wants a theocracy he is free to choose one. I will hold the border open for him so he can start his search, right now.

9. What a rude awakening for Thompson
And a chilling message for every Republican candidate.

Either you bow before their altar and kiss Dobson's ring - or you're cast back into the wilderness.

10. Fred Thompson should hold a press conference demanding that Dobson
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 08:39 AM by Old Crusoe
renounce his faith.

Thompson should insist that Jim Dobson renounce his faith in Christianity becaue he, Dobson, does not represent Christianity, does not speak for Christianity, wouldn't know Christianity if it bit him in the ass, and further that if this is all Dobson can contribute to the national dialogue, it would be better if he kept his un-American mouth shut.

I'd have more respect for Fred Thompson if he challenged Dobson on this. We don't need even one more Republican tremblin in their boots every time Jim Dobson says something in the media.

13. The mullahs like Dobson have power because the Repubs allow them; what Dobson
and the other mullahs need to hear is a collective "FU".. but The Republicans will never do that, to our benefit.
