Pet shelters in need of food donations
(Cross posting from the Pets group)

I heard on the radio this morning that our local shelter desperately needs donations to replace all the pet food they had to pull off of their shelves. Mine is in Houston, but I imagine shelters around the country are feeling the pinch.

Just thought I'd help spread the word to check your local shelter websites.

The Houston Humane Society (HHS) is issuing an emergency plea for dog and cat food. The HHS goes through over 200 pounds of food per day, and were beginning to experience a shortage even before last week’s report of recalled foods from Menu Foods.

Our stock of donated food included cans and pouches of the recalled products from Menu Foods, and needs to be replaced with a safe alternative. We are especially in need of food formulated for puppies and kittens, and dry food for the large adoptable dogs.

We will be collecting food beginning immediately. Please refer to this website for a list of products recalled by Menu Foods, and avoid those products, for both our animals and your own. Anyone who doesn’t feel comfortable choosing a safe brand of pet food can assist by donating money or gift cards to Petsmart, Petco or Sam’s Club, so we can purchase food ourselves, tax-free. Kitty litter is also always a necessity.

Note: no adoptable animals at the Houston Humane Society have become ill from consuming Menu Food products.

To donate online please click here (http://www.houstonhumane.org/godonate.html ) and click on Food Fund Drive or call us with a credit card donation: 713-433-6421 ext. 321.

3. Shouldn't Menu Foods be replacing/reimbursing for any recalled food?
What's the deal?

6. Donate Money; Always Needed
Always remember when donating to shelters or other animal welfare groups: If you don't know which foods are safe and are worried, you can always donate money, and they will buy it. Money is always badly needed.

The way this thing is going, it seems more and more of the corporations are ending up being either branches of the larger pimp, or are getting ingredients from the same unregulated, concealed-source supplier. Like all the "many" channels on cable, that are all General Electric or Disney. You may think you are buying a separate brand, when really it is another name of the same oppressor. Bird flu and mad cow "disease," (actually poisoning because of cheap corporate feed practices, feeding vegetarian cows ground-up brains and nerve tissue), also spread because of the globalized commercial reach of corporations. This may only be the beginning of this kind of capitalist threat, but they already deserve to burn in Hell for this deliberate murder of our beloved animal friends.

8. Oh, how weird -- I misread the title as "pot shelters".
Brownies on the way!
