Okay, I'll admit, I'm a little bitter
http://www.savenaples.org/

I've been working on this all week. It's an undeveloped stretch of coastline that they're planning on putting 100+ McMansions on. The lots may go for as much as 20 million dollars, and the houses are all going to be 10,000+ square feet.

I'm just frustrated that rich people can take a big crap on the Earth while the poor and middle income people are living paycheck to paycheck.

That is all. :)

2. kick
I can't tell you how much it irritates me that people feel the need to put over-sized houses on everything and don't give a rat's ass about the environment.

:grr:

If the Peak Oil folks are right those Mcmansions are going to 80 shells and three shepherding huts in 20 years.

4. Why do you hate America?
These people obviously earned every penny they have and it's their right to spend it on any disgusting display of conspicuous consumption they want. If other people are starving or displaced because of envronmental degradation, well...they should have thought about that before they decided to be poor.

Sadly, I really need the :sarcasm: tag, given recent posts by otherwise sane and reasonable DUers.

8. I stopped driving along the Coast Highway years ago
I remember what California used to look like. If they had to build along the coast, at least they could have done it with good taste. It never ceases to amaze me how a wealthy nation such as ours has rich people in it with such overwhemlingly bad taste. The French Riviera is built up but it's gorgeous and the buildings are harmonious and seem to have an organic quality to them, as they are made in the same style, with stone, and with earth colors. In the U.S. you are likely to see almost anything being built in one place, alpine structures, next to colonial, next to Cape Cod, next to ranch, next to the God-awful ugliest stucco California-style cookie-cutter houses that dot the landscape. And it's all made out of crappy wood and drywall. It destroyed me to see the wild coastal hills of the Irvine ranch between Corona Del Mar and Laguna Beach of 30 years ago get defiled with the incredibly tasteless and gaudy Roman-style entryway arches of some large development community that they erected several years ago. I don't drive on that highway anymore so I don't have to see it. Of course I would love for there to be empty natural scenery and 90% fewer people. But if they have to build it up, at least they could do it with harmony, consistency of style, order, and good taste. But they don't.

9. these edwards threads are going to kill me. I just got called a freeper.
jeez. I agree with all of you. what a shame. remember when gates tried to kill a wetland for his idiot house? someone is going to build a 255$ house some place. I suppose those who don't mind edwards mcmansion don't have a problem with that either. if they do, then they're hypocrites.

15. I have tried to stay out of the stupid house hysteria
I don't care what kind of house Edwards has. It seems to me that everyone who has the means to make it into the limelight of successful politics in this country is going to have a lot of money and a big ego. I never saw Kerry's house but I would imagine it's gigantic. It just never occurred to me in supporting Kerry that I should worry about his house.

I'm not an Edwards supporter, but if I were, the controversy wouldn't matter to me. If I were an Edwards supporter, I wouldn't be an Edwards worshipper, who can't accept that their candidate has flaws. Sure it's a giant flaw for someone who talks about this country's neglect of the poor to build himself the house of an aristocrat. But does it really matter? Do personal flaws matter? If I were an Edwards supporter and believed that his ideas about America were right, as opposed to his ideas about his personal life, then I could accept the fact he could be a drug addict, a womanizer, an ex-con, or any number of distasteful things in his personal life in addition to being a conspicuous consumer. None of that would really matter to me.

What would matter would be the ideas that Edwards would implement if he were President and whether he could reverse 8 years of disaster under a fetid Chimpanzee.

The reason I hate politics is the fact that people turn these ego-driven individuals into idols of worship. I don't care what kind of car my preferred candidate drives. I don't care about his wife. In fact, I don't ever want to even know if he has a wife or even see his wife and I think the notion of the "First Lady" or someday the "First Gentleman" is absurd, as we don't elect them. Why does every President have to be married and have to have sex with his wife? I don't want to know about the President's kids. I don't want to know the President's favorite color, the name of the President's dog or its sexual preferences, or any of that trivia that America seems to go crazy over. I never want to see the President kiss a baby or cut a ribbon or receive an honorary degree.

I just want to know what the President, as a representative of the people and not as an individual with a private life will do for this country. I don't give a fuck about the house he lives in. Even if he himself is destroying the environment around his home or even personally chooses to live in a strip mine, if he protects and promotes the environment at large, I could call him a hypocrite like Edwards seems to be a hypocrite, but I wouldn't care at all if I could also call him a President whose policies I support.
