Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 05:03 PM by LiberalHeart
Just heard this on CNN. I think they said it's one variety of Hills Science something (Prescription?) -- and I think it's DRY. Anyone know?

1. I heard that on CNN too.
They were alluding to the recall being extended to dry food but didn't really elaborate. I *hate* news reports like that - grr!

4. They make Science Diet and Prescription Diet, yes.
But the report was really vague and I was just walking in the room. I'm not sure what they were referring to, to be honest.

14. Thank you.
Our cat just died on Monday; he had been eating their C/D cans, so this kind of freaked me out, but it doesn't seem to be part of the recall.

24. here is a FDA press release from saturday
http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01599.html

"The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today notified Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc., of Topeka, Kansas, that FDA testing has detected melamine and melamine byproducts in wheat gluten received by the company to make dry cat food. FDA is conducting an investigation into pet food products made with wheat gluten that contains melamine and their association with reports of injury and deaths in cats and dogs. "

snip

"During two months in early 2007, Hill's Pet Nutrition manufactured Prescription Diet m/d Feline using wheat gluten from the same company that has supplied wheat gluten to Menu Foods, Inc. Menu Foods, Inc. (menufoods.com/recall) has also voluntarily recalled products potentially contaminated with melamine. See http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/petfood.html for more information on the pet food recall.

"The Hill’s cat food now being recalled is labeled Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food. The products are:

"4 lb. bag, U.S. & Canada UPC code 52742 42770
10 lb. bag, U.S. & Canada UPC code 52742 42790 "

3. The FDA did say it might be in some dry foods.
However, they stopped short of telling us which company it was until they tested further. We know that it is an American company. I don't know if CNN found out anything as specific as the Hills Science Diet, but we should all keep checking and spread the word. We can not let this rest or they will just stop reporting on it.

7. Here's the notice from Hill's...
http://www.hillspet.com/menu_foods/Menu_Foods_03302007_en_US.htm

Hills Pet Nutrition, Inc. Voluntarily Recalls Single Product, Prescription Diet™ m/d™ Feline Dry Food, Only Product Containing Wheat Gluten
Topeka, KS (March 30, 2007) - In accordance with its over-riding commitment to pet health and well-being, Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. is voluntarily recalling Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food from the market. Hill's is taking this precautionary action because during a two-month period in early 2007, wheat gluten for this product was provided by a company that also supplied wheat gluten to Menu Foods. U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests of wheat gluten samples from this period show the presence of a small amount of melamine. Prescription Diet m/d Feline Dry represents less than one half of one percent of all Hill's products.

This is the only product Hill's currently sells in the United States and Canada that contains wheat gluten from any supplier. No other Hill's Prescription Diet® or Science Diet® products are affected by this voluntary recall. Hill's Science Diet Savory Cuts Feline canned cat foods, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution. Together with this earlier withdrawal, less than 1% of all Hill's products have been affected.

The voluntary recall of Hill's Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from sellers. This recall does not include Prescription Diet m/d Feline canned food which contains no wheat gluten.

Consumers should stop using this product and return it for a refund. All Hill's products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled product.

Hill's expects to resume shipment shortly of a reformulated version of this highly beneficial product that will not contain wheat gluten. Please check with your veterinarian for an alternative Prescription Diet until m/d Feline dry is reformulated and made available again.

Following is a list of Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry products included in this recall: see link

11. I don't about that one but I just got an email from Iams
The assured me that Iams, and Eukanenia dry food were free of any of the agents that poisoned the pets. They said that had again checked their dry food for anything and it was safe.

I sort of believe them. They would not have sent the email, where we would have proof they screwed up if they hadn't checked it out. Of course they said today that the plastic used in utensils and coating frying pans was found in the food, but Iams said they did not use wheat guten of any kind in dry food.

16. Never hurts to post it twice...spreading the facts in the matter is what's needed!
After depending on Hill's almost 25 yrs. with many healthy long-lived cats, I'm concerned that this honesty on their part may affect their excellent record. Important to stop the wild speculations & insert some truth. Seems this recall is being done as a precaution more than anything else, but the Prescription Diet is generally used for pets with existing problems, so I could see how there'd be concern with finding any wheat gluten in it, especially if it had any association with Menu Foods suppliers also.

People sometimes need to see something over & over again. Post the Hill's notice over on Latest Breaking News...I couldn't find anything over there about it.

15. This suggests that every pet owner in the country using any brand pet food
....may have exposed their pets <dogs and cats> to toxic substances?

Now, what is known about the human food chain of imported grains and canned foods, such as rice from India and imported pork/lamb from central and western Asia?

20. Globalization without safety regulations and inspections and

21. All it suggests is that as a PRECAUTION, Hill's has taken one product with wheat gluten away...
Their notice advised as a precaution, they are recalling ONE dry-food product which contains wheat gluten, simply because a shipment this year of that wheat gluten was supplied by a company which also shipped to Menu Foods.

Just walking your dog in most parts of this country exposes it to toxic substances, such as car exhaust & other air pollution, so I don't see how you've jumped to the conclusion you have.

Of course, my advice has always been to grow one's own food...butchered any pigs or lambs lately? Once we are all forced to do our own "dirty work", eating will become an entirely different indulgence in this nation.

18. So let me get this straight....Hill's Prescription Foods,
the ones vets push constantly, are made by the same company that makes Wal-Mart and Aldi store brands, a company that imported cheap, contaminated wheat gluten into the American wheat belt. Is that what this means?

I smell fraud.
