Don't Blame our Vets and the Products they Sold..DIG DEEPER!
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 05:55 PM by KoKo01
So, the Product Recall extends to Dry Food for our pets and we should just "shut up." I'm not a "Peta" Advocate but one shouldn't throw out "baby with bathwater" either.

For many of us our pets are our children and we take all of this VERY SERIOUSLY ...considering that the Bushies can wipe out the EPA Libraries and do away with Habeus and every right we have..we need to know that their CORPORATE PRIVATIZATION probably has an effect on Pet Food Manufacturers who are now finding ways to "escape constraints...by promoting "Free Market" knowing the Chimp/Repugs will give them A PASS AS OUR PETS DIE and WE ARE SOAKED WITH VET BILLS!

Never let it be said that BUSHIES DON'T TAKE CARE OF THE MED PROFESSIONALS! But, they do it in ways that even the most ANIMAL FRIENDLY PROFESSIONALS ...can take pause...as to what their profession is all about.

How many Vets were sold "Bill of Goods" about the PRODUCTS THEY PROMOTED! Thinking they were safe with Sales People PUSHING the SAFETY...how could HONEST VETS ACROSS AMERICA really know that they were culpable in the very sickness and death they were seeing in their practice.

The FAULT is in BELIEVEING...and Vet's like their fellow HUMAN DOCTORS are OFTEN VICTIMS OF MEDIAL MARKETEERS WHO PREY ON THEIR BUSY PRACTICES.

THIS ...needs to change!

HERE's DU LINK that SET ME OFF!

1. Vets are capable of, and responsible for, researching the products they hawk
That's what we pay them for. When vets were telling people to buy Hill's m/d clients had no idea that it isn't made at a Hill's factory, but by a third party using cheap Chinese wheat. But vets should have known the specifics about the products they recommend.

One of my cats was getting c/d. No more. I'll find an alternative. Hill's and Menu Foods have gotten the last money they'll ever get from me.

3. people who go into veterinarian medicine
do out of love of animals. They have it much harder than reg dr's and don't make anywhere the money.

they could of been plastic surgeons, instead they do the best they can, and how it must affect them when a little boy or girl cries because of their beloved pet being put down.

I have found vets I didn't care for, but the majority are true humanitarians.

I don't think anyone has blamed the vet?

It's China and slimy corporations

9. I know...my post was giving "support" to Veterinarians who are doing their jobs with Compassion
but knowing that just like with our "Human Medical Professionals" they have limited time and the Drug Reps take advantage of this and push their products. That's what I'm saying.

16. I will lose Sasha to kidney failure
just like I lost 3 others a few yrs back. I said it must be the food, the vets disagreed. I have been nursing her for 2 1/2 yrs now. She is my child, and it hurts so deeply to know how I lost the others.

I am a Peta person, but that's beside the point.

I hope this ruins the pet food industry, right now she gets scallops and chicken, I know I'm contradicting myself belonging to Peta and feeding her chicken. Couldn't get her turned onto tofu.

23. We do the best we can. I went through 2 years of kidney failure with one of
my kitties and I was making homemade rice food and doing everything I could to keep him going. He went into kidney failure after getting a distemper vaccination. That was years ago...and now my vet is telling me they aren't going to give older cats the distemper shot every year but have extended it to every three years or not at all for indoor cats because they've found that "once a year" is too much for all cats and particularly bad for older cats.

Apparently the every two year rabies vaccinations have been changed, also. When I went to my vet last time she had me read a sheet about their new policy on vaccinations and the sheet said that they were changing the rabies to a new form of vaccine because the old one caused "granuloma's, tumors and other problems. I was surprised the practice was so "up front" about it. Kind of scary, though thinking about all the concerns about kids vaccines.

Anyway, my poor kitty finally succumbed to the kidney failure but he did have a good long life before that. It's the young kitties who could get this from food that's so upsetting and there's still very little media attention to it.

8. Sorry, but that WAS a fair question and nobody was attacking vets per say
Many of us thanked the vet in that thread, but still, trying to dissuade any of us from holding CORPORATIONS responsible for what they do or license their names to is somewhat bogus.

Wheat - we grow it here. There is some within 500 yards of where I live. It is cheap and there is lots of it. It IS fair to question why anyone would defend the folks using wheat from China.

12. Good Point...WHY are we importing Crap Food with Melamines & Pesticides to Thwart
our own American Standards put into the FDA Regs for YEARS through many Administrations? Only with the Bushie Fascists have we had the "Roll Back" of Regs over "Safe Food for People and Pets" come onto the stage as a point to even put forth for "Discussion" about what's RIGHT AND WRONG when it comes to Health and Safety for Americans!

This administration seems to think we "THE PEOPLE" are third world countries or Banana Republics that need to still "bargain" for our RIGHTS...that we WON through two CENTURIES being the NEW WORLD and the NEW PATH for FREEDOM AND RIGHTS FOR THE COMMON PEOPLE!!!

In just 7 Years...we are in DANGER OF LOSING IT ALL!!!! Because "some folks" didn't understand the Democratic Experiment or take our CONSTITUION seriously!

14. I don't blame the vets at all
They just distribute the prescription food. The companies that make it should be more careful.

My two diabetic kitties lived long, healthy lives on Hills' W/D food that we got from our vet. When I heard about this, I called our vet to see if our food was covered under the ban, and she paged me within 15 minutes. Fortunately, it's not.

Hills Pet Nutrition, Inc. Voluntarily Recalls Single Product, Prescription Diet™ m/d™ Feline Dry Food, Only Product Containing Wheat Gluten

Topeka, KS (March 30, 2007) - In accordance with its over-riding commitment to pet health and well-being, Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. is voluntarily recalling Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food from the market. Hill's is taking this precautionary action because during a two-month period in early 2007, wheat gluten for this product was provided by a company that also supplied wheat gluten to Menu Foods. U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests of wheat gluten samples from this period show the presence of a small amount of melamine. Prescription Diet m/d Feline Dry represents less than one half of one percent of all Hill's products.

This is the only product Hill's currently sells in the United States and Canada that contains wheat gluten from any supplier. No other Hill's Prescription Diet® or Science Diet® products are affected by this voluntary recall. Hill's Science Diet Savory Cuts Feline canned cat foods, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution. Together with this earlier withdrawal, less than 1% of all Hill's products have been affected.

The voluntary recall of Hill's Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from sellers. This recall does not include Prescription Diet m/d Feline canned food which contains no wheat gluten.

Consumers should stop using this product and return it for a refund. All Hill's products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled product.

Hill's expects to resume shipment shortly of a reformulated version of this highly beneficial product that will not contain wheat gluten. Please check with your veterinarian for an alternative Prescription Diet until m/d Feline dry is reformulated and made available again.

19. I had a cat named Ernie many years ago
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 07:13 PM by Horse with no Name
I had gone away on Friday night, and when I returned on Sunday morning, he was very ill.
He had massive diarrhea...it was all over my apartment. He was lying in a ball of matted fur with his nose running and was very very ill.
I immediately called my vet AT HOME. She met me at her office and started IV's on him and got him comfortable. She told me it was something I had never heard of. Feline Leukemia.
It was touch and go. I loved this cat.
After she stabilized him, she sent him home. He was anorexic because his nose was stopped up.
Every single day we administered IV fluid boluses and force fed him to eat.
I took him to the vet every day. She didn't charge me anything except what her cost was.
She gave him an experimental drug (I cannot remember the name as it has been 20+ years ago). It was a chemotherapy to fight the FL.
It worked, but it made him very sick.
At one point, my beautiful 20 lb. longhair cat was almost bald and weighed less than 3 lbs and couldn't walk.
He had to be carried.
Two months into it, he started recovering. He responded well to the treatment.
If it weren't for this wonderful vet, my cat would have died.
She could have charged me thousands where she only charged me hundreds and I would have had to make a difficult choice.
Incidentally, she also put Ernie on Science Diet and he thrived.
The vets aren't the ones to blame here. It is the deregulation of governmental regulations that even allowed that crap into the country.
Science Diet has been great for years. There has never been an indication to think things would change.

On edit I left out one of the most important parts.
For some reason when his hair grew back, his long hair became medium but was an almost different color.
The vet used to tell me that everytime she had a bad day or lost a pet, she would always think about Ernie and pulling him back to life.

20. Thanks for sharing...and it get's to my point...it's Not the Vets but the
folks who formulate the products and the Conglomerates who have taken them over who decided to buy stuff from China or wherever to "cut costs."

And, that this "Corporate Takeover" allowed one Huge Company to make products for companies that many of us spent money on (that some could afford and others of us sacrificed for to give good quality ingredients to our Pet Family Members) while all along this company was packaging for Store Brands along with Premium and we "consumers" didn't know that we were buying the SAME STUFF buy PAYING SO MUCH MORE!

It's not the VETS it's the "system" we live under in the American Corporatist/Global Take Over. We learn to live with it or we fight...or we suffer and die with our pets. :-(

22. That's interesting article. Friend of mine just swtiched her dauchsund to raw diet
made by "Aunt Jennie" that she buys at a holistic pet store. The raw food comes in a plastic container and you scoop it out. It doesn't look bad (better than some of the regular commerical wet food) with no offensive odor. She says her dogs ear infections have gone away and he's gotten down to a better weight since he's been on it.

Apparently you can order it from "Aunt Jennie.com" but some pet stores sell it. It's not cheap...but they don't have any other kids except their dauchsund...so it's important to them. Also their little guy was always on antibiotics for ear infections and that was expensive and a nuisance. I guess it evens out.
