I thank you so much for helping all of us through this pet recall nightmare. Thank you!

I have a question: My Bostons have been eating Mighty dog CANS mixed with kibble.

When this story first broke, I FLIPPED! Got on Mighty dogs website...called them. They assured me that only the POUCHES were affected, not the cans. They are made in different places...

Tonight after hearing this recall for kibble, I got BACK online and checked...again, they are saying that only the POUCHES are affected.

I finally checked the ingredients. The can says WHEAT GLUTEN. :scared:

Now, I must say that they seem to be fine and have been eating fine with no apparent symptoms.

Thoughts?

2. If the food you are feeding has NOT been recalled, you PROBABLY
have no reason for concern. They obviously know who supplied the tainted wheat gluten to Hill's and Menu Foods. They would have by now contacted anyone else who bought it, I suspect. If you are REALLY nervous, I would talk to your vet tomorrow about alternatives that do NOT contain wheat gluten.

I have been doing cat's only for so long, I am really not up on all the dog food brands anymore. It's hard enough for me to keep track of the larger cat food brands.

8. I've been feeding my dog the same thing since the scare. She loves it.
I recall reading that dogs can't tell the difference between kibble and table food, or something like that--that they have no taste. All I know is, she never licked her lips after eating her dry food. It is hard to keep it and make it after feeding her with just a pour from the bag for six years but it's worth it.

12. Yes, Kestrel--you have been great, taking
so much of your time, when you must be very busy, to inform and reassure pet owners here on DU. My cats had not been eating the recalled food, but I still followed your posts assiduously, because I wanted to understand as much as I could about the problem.

3. Thanks to EVERYBODY for all your nice comments - I only wish I could
respond to them individually!

I'm doing my best here to keep everybody up to speed. Tomorrow is a busy day for me so I don't know how much I will be able to do. I hear a big presser from the FDA is scheduled for the AM.

11. Thank you!!! And I have a question too even though
I know you are short on time. Should we be feeding the pets homemade recipes to make sure they stay okay and be feeding them far less pet food. I mean I know they need their taurine and all but I think if we feed them human quality food supplemented with brand pet dood, we may all be better off.

25. I agree! kestrel91316, and also nicknameless, have been wonderful
about keeping us up to speed on all of this. The MSM certainly hasn't been much help, so what would we do without all of our fellow DUers who have worked so hard to keep the rest of us informed?! As I have often said about DU, liberals love animals!:hi:

As for the Mighty Dog, I also read that only the pouches were affected. The varieties of food to avoid are the kinds that are meat cuts in sauce/gravy or the kinds in foil pouches. But I've still read the ingredients on all the cans of dog food in the house (with three dogs in the house, that's several kinds) and anything containing wheat gluten is going in the trash. The foods that I give my two little guys doesn't contain wheat gluten - and I've checked and double checked - and their foods (Hill's prescription A/D and Eukanuba puppy) haven't appeared on any list *yet*, but I still cooked up a batch of chicken and rice for them today, anyway. I just feel better about doing this until this whole frightening mess is resolved...:scared:
