His latest, written with CounterPunch co-editor Jeffrey St. Clair, is End Times: The Death of the Fourth Estate. Mr. Cockburn is a columnist for The Nation and co-editor of CounterPunch, a political newsletter. His work has appeared in many publications, including the Wall Street Journal, where he had a regular column from 1980 to 1990.

Actor Mike Farrell portrayed B.J. Hunnicutt on the television program M*A*S*H*and has been a human rights and anti-death penalty activist for many years. Appearing at a book party on Capitol Hill, Mr. Farrell briefly discusses his memoir and meets a number of members of Congress.

Ken Alder, The Lie Detectors: The History Of An American Obsession
The author focuses on America's fascination with the concept of truth in his history of the lie detector, a device invented in the 1920's by John Larson and Leonarde Keeler. Mr. Larson did not want to see the device used commercially, and its sale for general application by Mr. Keeler lead to the dissolution of the inventors' relationship.

Bruce Herschensohn, Taiwan: The Threatened Democracy
Bruce Herschensohn served as deputy special assistant to President Nixon and as an adviser on Ronald Reagan's 1980 transition team. In his book, he looks at the conflict between Taiwan and China, and the U.S. policy on Taiwan since the mid-20th Century.
