The Kennedy Asssasination: A "Friday News Dump"?
I do not understand how we as a nation will process gigantic amounts of news throughout the week and then be subject to a loss of consciousness on the weekends. Now as a youth, I knew all about Friday nights and Saturdays, and the day-long sobering up so to speak, on Sundays, but the events occurring presently are impressive enough to make it through the haze. Or they should be.

I believe that the News outlets, if they want to make things interesting should show reprises of the week, develop the contexts for the coming week, have somewhat intelligent discussions, and thus pre-empt the 576th showing of the Biography of Robert Blake or Jackie Onassis.

And I also believe in the Tooth Fairy I guess. There's about as much chance of her showing up than this occurring on CNN/MSNBC.

1. You're right, of course
But our corporate news media is not interested in that. The news today is in the hands of such a small number of wealthy individuals, and they are interested in journalism the way that our news media used to be, rather they are simply capitalists out to make more money, however they can do that. Until our Congress passes laws that break up this monopoly of the news, that's the way it will continue I'm afraid.

3. I'd love to see a real controversial, debate show
on the most contentious subjects we have. You know they would create ratings if we could hear experts debate without people screaming over each other. You wouldn't even need an audience just a moderator. People could call in who they think won like American Idol. How expensive could it be to produce?

But they don't want to inform. They don't care about ratings. They want to control the debate by not having one. All we have are pretty people spinning their wheels. (With the exception of K.O.)

5. In this instance, the news people are responders, not generators.
They live and die by readership/viewership and circulation numbers. Those numbers nose-dive come Friday afternoon and through Saturday. People are resting, chilling, traveling, drinking, grilling, cleaning...unplugging. Hell, I try (but usually fail) to make it a point not to crack a paper on Saturdays.

So, in this instance, I don't necessarily fault the news folks.

6. No question we all try to go into intellectual impulse power
as opposed to hyperdrive, but as the Newsradio station often says here in Philly: News Happens on the Weekends, followed by clips of breaking stories like the JFK Fr. death, Diana, shuttle disaster, etc...

Just sayin'...

7. When I worked in TV, the argument went like this...
I'd fight for serious news coverage on the weekend. The powers that be would say there wasn't enough audience to justify it. And I'd say "but if you build it, they will come." And so it went, round and round. I did a test with the Web site, posting content on weekends (something not done up to then) and traffic went up significantly (results could be seen immediately). There's an appetite out there and it should be fed.
