Pet Food Recall Expands to New Wet Brand
By ANDREW BRIDGES 03.31.07, 10:02 AM ET

The recall of wet and dry pet foods contaminated with a chemical found
in plastics and pesticides expanded Saturday to include a new brand even
as investigators were puzzled why the substance would kill dogs and cats.

Nestle Purina PetCare Co. said it was recalling all sizes and varieties of
its Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes.
Purina said a limited amount of the food contained a contaminated wheat
gluten from China.

The same U.S. supplier also provided wheat gluten, a protein source,
to a Canadian company, Menu Foods, which this month recalled 60 million
containers of wet dog and cat food it produces for sale under nearly
100 brand labels.

1. FDA press release on this:

I note that only yesterday was Purina informed by the FDA that their supplier had sold them wheat gluten contaminated with melamine.

Re Hill's M/D:

I also note that only yesterday was Hill's informed by the FDA that their supplier had sold them wheat gluten contaminated with melamine.

I am pointing this aspect out specifically because there had been some questions about who knew what and when from many DUers, including me. Now we have the facts. Both companies acted immediately upon being informed by FDA that THEY had a problem.

Let's hope the slows down the conspiracy-mongering.

2. Damn, that's what I mix into dry food for my dog
The package I have now has all of the same codes except the plant code, so I hope we squeaked by on that one. Guess I'll be making some homemade batches of pet food from now on.

4. Yeah, I'd toss it even if the codes don't all match.

5. So far it seems Purina Products are Safe for Cats...dry & wet food...
but who knows what else is going to come out with the new Vitamin D problem in Royal Canine..which had nothing to do with our FDA it seems.

My cats are on Purina ...but one of them is hyperthyroid and can't take the med to control it so I worry about her eating anything that will tip her. She's very thin but stablized.

And...we don't know if the specialized products not made by the big manufacturers are being tested or are they so small in distribution that they go under the FDA guidelines radar.

I don't even think many Americans are aware of the problem (elderly folks and ones who aren't on internet or those just busy and not paying attention) and one hopes that the grocery stores got all the products off the shelves...but many were sold before the latest recalls. What a mess!

And, for all the hard working vets who must be inundated with calls while trying to run their practices and keep up with the latest, too.

3. I fed this to my 2 golden retrievers last night. The serial #'s
match up exactly. They each got 1/2 can with their dry food. I've talked to the vet and he told me what to look out for. He also advised no more canned food period, from any brand. From now on, they get dry food and people food!
