I went to work on my daughter's 18th birthday. When I got home, she ran in to tell me she had joined the Air Force. Not only had she joined, but she'd signed on for six years, because the recruiter promised her a sign-on bonus which by the way, she never got.

Yesterday, I drove to the airport to pick her up and bring her home. She will stay with us a few months till she gets settled and figures out what's next in her life.

I am elated beyond measure.

2. Perhaps I'm dense, but I can't get from your post if this was a recent event
Or did she sign up for the AF six years ago and is just now getting out? Congratulations though either way for having your daughter home for awhile.

3. Yes, she joined in 2001
and finished up her six years last week. I have spent the last two years talking my head off to try to convince her not to re-inlist.

4. Congratulations on her safe return,
And yes, hopefully she won't re-enlist. However don't forget that for a few years yet she will be able to be called back if needed. Not big threat, but still there.

6. It's not worth it
I'd rather she stay under the radar for the next few years, we won't make any waves.

7. Tell her thanks from at least one DUer for serving our country.
We live a pretty soft life in this country, in large part because people like your daughter create a wall between us and the world's harms. Neocons seek to exploit that wall, that wonderful service, that your daughter and her comrades provide--because they love us without knowing us, because they see the military as an honorable thing, not as chess peices to move about to muscle in on somebody else's oil.

Thank your daughter for me. She's made me safer. I hope she finds a good job and makes a great life for herself.
