SAN ANTONIO — A former Texas attorney general has been released from a halfway house after getting about six months trimmed off his four-year federal prison sentence on account of good behavior, authorities said.

Dan Morales, 50, pleaded guilty in 2003 to mail fraud and filing a false income tax return. The charges resulted from an investigation surrounding legal fees paid in the state's $17 billion settlement with the tobacco industry while he was the state's chief attorney.

He admitted falsifying a contract so that a longtime friend and lawyer could personally profit from the settlement. Morales had contended that Houston lawyer Marc Murr was due $560 million from the settlement

an offshore tax cheat which was a SLAM DUNK by "filing the wrong form".

WASHINGTON - Poorly written Justice Department documents cost the federal government more than $100 million in what was supposed to have been the crowning moment of the biggest tax prosecution ever.

But U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman said he couldn‘t order Anderson to repay the federal government $100 million to $175 million because the Justice Department‘s binding plea agreement with Anderson listed the wrong statute.

"I‘ve come to the conclusion, very reluctantly, that I have no authority to order restitution," Friedman said. "I hope the government will appeal me."

3. I believe it was Morales however who had the guts to go after the health insurance industry.
Am I wrong?

4. Actually Morales was, sadly, a Democrat.
He was a candidate for Texas governor as well and was an up and comer but he got greedy and tried to cash in on a big tobacco settlement case.
