In any other instance, they would name the distributor, but something tells me they don't want anyone to know. Why? Who are they protecting?

20. My Research ideas
Edited on Sat Mar-31-07 11:18 PM by BadgerKid
1. Google "feed grade wheat protein". Turns up lots of sources in China

2. web site for global trade / international distributors: http://www.alibaba.com/

3. Assuming it's an American distrubtor, there could be filings with the FTC (maybe even with the SEC if it's a publically traded company).
For example, the "Analysis" PDF on the page
http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2001/12/nestleralston.htm dated December 11, 2001 says that

(quote)
Ralston is a corporation organized, existing, and doing business under and by virtue of the laws of the State of Missouri. Ralston is the world s leading producer of dry dog and dry and soft-moist cat foods. The brands that Ralston manufacturers, distributes, and sells include Dog Chow, Puppy Chow, Cat Chow, Kitten Chow, Purina Special Care, Meow Mix, Purina O.N.E., Purina Pro Plan, Fit & Trim, Clinical Nutrition Management, Alley Cat, Deli-Cat, Thrive, Tender Vittles, Happy Cat, Chuck Wagon Stampede, and Main Stay."

4. Something is starting to smell odd in these recall stories.
I don't meant that I don't believe them, but I'm starting to wonder if they really DID find the true cause of the problem. We are talking about a HUGH # of different brands of pet food here folks! So far, even the reporters looking on the dark side are saying they've had reports of 8,000 pets possibly affected. That doesn't sound believable to me. Menu Foodsrecalled 92 different brands, Hills & Alpo were added, and now products from Del Monte? Does it really sound like that much pet food would only affect 8,000 pets?

I think we're either dealing with a lot of over caution, or they haven't really found the real problem yet, and the real problem contaminated far fewer products that they now think.

19. Yea, I know. CNN was reporting the 16 confirmed deaths, but they
also said there have been 8,000 deaths possibly linked to this food. I still find this completely unbelievable. There are more than 8,000 pets in our local town! And these folks are trying to convince me that there have only been 8,000 across the Country? I'm not usually such a non believer, but IMO, if the story doesn't make sense, there's definately something wrong!

28. I agree, it doesn't make sense
I'd like to hope it's true though. It'd be terrible if it turns out to be far more widespread than even 8000 nationwide, as the info we know implies.

As I wrote below, we lost a dog to kidney failure seven years ago. It's not nice. And there was a lot of guilt associated with it because we didn't check the medicine the vet was giving her to see what side effects there might be, and to know what she should have been doing (but wasn't) to make sure our dog's kidneys weren't being affected. By the time the symptoms appeared it was too late, she lived only a month longer. I kick myself for that. I cannot imagine living with the knowledge that I killed a pet by feeding them poison.

18. 8,000 is only the tip of the iceburg.
You're quoting the website that's compiling online responses, right? (Can't think of their name at the moment...) If so, I'm sure that's only a small percentage of pet owners affected.

1. The dissemination of information about the affected brands has been horrendous. It's been one incomplete list after another with new brands added almost daily. Some of these foods are still on store shelves ... people are confused, vets are confused, everybody's confused (but that's the point I think).

2. Of pet owners who DO keep up with the latest recall info, how many know to go to a website to check in? How many have a computer?

No, I think when the dust settles we'll see there have been many thousands more pets affected than currently thought.

It also wouldn't surprise me if this contaminate turns out to be something altogether different than either melamine or rat poison.

All I meant was this 8,000 # doens't make sense to me! As I posted in an above thread, our little town has more than 8,000 pets, and these idiots are trying to convince me that there's only 8,000 possibilites across the Country? Sorry, I call BS!

Canada produces an enormous amount of wheat! And why is Canada buying any product treated with poisons that Canada herself outlaws.
Are WE buying wheat from China too? Isn't that insane, considering we're the leading producers of wheat in the world? Is this another example of the joys the "Global Economy" has in store for us?

7. ALPO cuts and gravy is now also being added to the list!!!!
I ran out of my dog's canned Mighty dog the other day, and picked up a large can of Alpo(made by Purina) Before I fed it to him I called the phone # on the can to make sure it was OK. They said yeah, it's not on the list. Fortunately he was fed only half of the can in two feedings before I saw the News banner on CNN today. My first reaction was panic and anger, and to just throw it out. My better sense stopped me, 'cause if something happens to my "son" a Bichon Frise, I will be joining a class action suit!!! Bastards, what the hell are they thinking with this Chinese wheat crap???? He is like a child to me, and I would be lost without my only companion.

There are a few, like Trader Joes (who recalled their canned food voluntarily to make sure it isn't contaminated).

Unfortunately, most corporations aren't that altruistic. Profit before all else.

IOW, they wouldn't put themselves in the position to lose multi-millions of dollars "to be on the safe side." Nope.

Is the only dry food my cat will eat. I give her a half a can of Fancy Feast a day too. She won't eat any chunky style canned or pouch foods and she's never been interested in any table foods.

She's a very spry and playful 13 years old and has always been very healthy. So far I'm seeing no changes in her so I hope that continues. I'm going to call her vet on Monday just to touch base and see what they're recommending.

Our neighbors feed their dogs Del Monte, I'll give them the printout first thing tomorrow.

And up until last week we were giving one of our dogs the Ol' Roy jerky strips!! I still have the tub. It's not part of the recall lot, but I stopped giving them when I found they contained wheat gluten. Damn them. We lost a dog seven years ago to kidney failure and if another of my babies has to go through that just because these greedy bastards are too CHEAP to care what they put in their pet foods I will make it my mission to DESTROY them.

In any case, nothing with wheat or any other gluten gets into our dogs ANY MORE.

29. The attorneys suing Menu Foods will EASILY obtain this information
with the first round of discovery, I suspect. If they were smart they sued not only Menu Foods but Does 1 through 50.

As you discover who the Does are you name them in the suit, too.

Maybe I should have been an attorney. I won a huge Federal court suit against me by a person who, as a result of her loss, got declared a vexatious litigant. I never even consulted an attorney. I just waited for the forty other defendants to hire expensive attorneys to get their part dismissed, and then I presented a rational case in my own defense to the judge.

Which is inexcusibly OT, I know. But people might wonder why I know anything at all about the law.

Alpo® Brand Prime Cuts In Gravy Canned Dog Food Voluntary Nationwide Recall
March 30, 2007

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning today that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities.

Consumers should immediately stop feeding their dogs ALPO Prime Cuts products with the date codes listed below and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet.

The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.

Importantly, no Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall - including ALPO Prime Cuts dry. In addition, no other Purina dog food products, no Purina cat food products, Purina treat products or Purina Veterinary Diet products are included in this recall, nor have been impacted by the contaminated wheat gluten supply.

At Purina, nothing is more important to us than the health and well-being of the pets whose nutrition has been entrusted to us by their owners, and we deeply regret this unfortunate situation. We will continue to take any and all actions necessary to ensure the quality and safety of our products.

Please see our March 30 press release for more information and click here for an updated list of Frequently Asked Questions. If you have more questions or concerns, please contact our Office of Consumer Affairs at 1-800-218-5898.

Doesn't mean you shouldn't have a creepy feeling, though.

Del Monte Pet Products Voluntarily Withdraws Specific Product Codes of Pet Treats and Wet Dog Food Products

SAN FRANCISCO, March 31, 2007—As a precautionary measure, Del Monte Pet Products is voluntarily recalling select product codes of its pet treat products sold under the Jerky Treats®, Gravy Train® Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels® brands as well as select dog snack and wet dog food products sold under private label brands. A complete list of affected brands and products is below.

The Company took this voluntary recall action immediately after learning this morning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Del Monte Pet Products from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall.

The adulteration occurred in a limited production quantity on select product codes of the brands below. This recall removes all Del Monte pet products with wheat gluten procured from this manufacturing facility from retail shelves.

No other Del Monte Pet Products treats, biscuits or wet dog food products are impacted by this recall, and no Del Monte dry cat food, dry dog food, wet cat food or pouched pet foods are subject to this voluntary recall. The affected products comprise less than one-tenth of one percent of Del Monte Pet Products' annual pet food and pet treat production.

Del Monte Pet Products has proactively engaged and fully cooperated with the FDA since the start of its investigation. The adulterated ingredients were used in limited production over the last three months for those items identified by specific product codes. Del Monte Pet Products has not used wheat gluten from this manufacturing facility in China in any other pet products except those described below.

Consumers should discontinue feeding the products with the Product Codes detailed below to their pets.

Del Monte Pet Products are 100% guaranteed and all voluntarily recalled products will be refunded.

Del Monte Pet Products customers can contact our Consumer Hotline at (800) 949-3799 for further information about the recall and for instructions on obtaining a product refund. 38. ADD ANOTHER ONE TO THE RECALL LIST -- THIS ONE IS FOR SALMONELLA
http://digital50.com/news/items/BW/2001/07/14/20070331005008/eight-in-one-announces-nationwide-recall-of-all-lots-of-dingor-chickn-jerky-treats.html

"Eight In One Announces Nationwide Recall of All Lots of Dingo(R) CHICK'N JERKY Treats for Dogs, Cats and Ferrets

CINCINNATI-(Business Wire)-March 31, 2007 - Eight In One, Inc., a division of United Pet Group, Inc., is voluntarily recalling nationally all lots of Dingo(R) CHICK'N JERKY treats due to Company concerns that the jerky treats have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, which can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination, in people, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. The Food and Drug Administration is aware of this recall.

The products affected were sold at Target, PetSmart and other retailers. The products subject to this voluntary recall are Dingo CHICK'N JERKY 3.5 oz. and 8 oz. for dogs and Dingo Kitty CHICKEN JERKY 1.5 oz. for cats and Dingo Ferret CHICKEN JERKY 1.5 oz for ferrets.

Laboratory testing has shown that some samples of these chicken jerky treats were contaminated with Salmonella. The company is recalling all these products out of an abundance of caution. (snip)"

ADM = Bush cronies for sure... and their stuff is for both humans and pets.
Here are some other sources of wheat gluten.... for both people and pets.

I'm VERY worried that this is mixed in with our food supply and it's being hushed up.
Gotta go get an extra large box of tinfoil now. Geesh.

47. Guaranteed the US distributor is a big Bush backer and that is why they
are not releasing the name....
They don't want their stock to go down the tubes...or face the fines and other controversy involved.

49. Hi, everybody...
:hi:

I posted numerous updates on my blog http://2blackcats.wordpress.com regarding the pet food recall.

Hadn't been too great at updates recently because one of my cats was exposed to tainted food...he has a bladder infection and is doing okay (but threw up twice this weekend). Please wish us well...

50. I hope not all the Pounce Treats get recalled...
The Moist Chicken Hairball Remedy are the only treats my cat will eat. He turns up his nose to anything else.

52. Seriously... I have tried, Wiskas, and other Pounce treats...
and he'll sniff them and leave them on the floor. That is the only one he likes. If I could get the money back on all the trial and error treats I've bought.... oy that cat! :)
