Obama says Swine Flu May run course like "ordinary flus" BREAKING NEWS!
Edited on Fri May-01-09 11:58 AM by itsrobert
Does that mean it will get worse, because ordinary flu has killed thousands and thousands more than the over hyped "pandemic" swine flu?

1. No, it means that it will weaken and end in a predictable amount of time.
By Summer we'll be saying, "What ever happened with that Swine Flu thing?"

2. You missed the second part that it may come back far more virulent
Edited on Fri May-01-09 12:01 PM by nadinbrzezinski
in the fall

DID YOU PURPOSELY MISS THAT?

I am glad our government, is taking this seriously

WHY?

This is what happened in 1918 (the first cases were mild and in 1917 I am sure you knew that.

Then there was 1957 when there was the same pattern

Did I mention '68?

I know I am glad the adults, not people like you, are in charge

4. And you don't think medical science has taken big leaps since 1918?
Weren't they still bleeding people back then?

5. no they were not bleeding people back then unless you think in the trenches
nor were they bleeding them in '57 or for that matter in '68

And why do you think the vax will probably have elements of this thing in the fall?

THat says your cavalier attitude is amazing given that yes the FLU is a serious disease that oh noes it kills fer real

10. Besides the point. Do you agree that medical science has come a long way since 1918?
Or even since 1968?

12. It is not besides the point, it is a matter of fact
and even if you do not like it, when it comes back in the fall if it follows the regular pattern and it kills even just the 35000 people that it kills a year, you will still scoff, and if it kills double that you will still scoff

I know

By the way, the only thing we MIGHT have in time for the flu is a vaccine,

IF we don't the treatment for the flu today is the same as it was in 1968

Bed rest, plenty of liquids, antipyretics. (fever reducing meds, such at tylenol, avoid aspirin...)

Most people will not go in time to the doc to get the antivirals that only REDUCE the time it takes to heal you, not cure you

13. There's a big difference between taking this seriously and being scared to death
It may or may not come back in a stronger form in the fall - we don't know that yet, and to say that it WILL as a "matter of fact" is presumptive. And the point still stands - medical science HAS advanced over the past 90 years. If it comes back, we're in a better position to deal with it than we were back in 1918.

BTW, where do you get off saying that I am "scoffing"? You not fucking KNOW me. If anything, I am trying to keep things in perspective. Scientists have already come out and said that this version of the flu appears to be milder than even the "regular" flu. And yes, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people die every year from the regular flu. Nobody is trivializing that fact. And even a single death from this new version is unfortunate - but not a reason for wholesale public panic either.

15. Let me clue you in, this is how scared, according to you I am about this
not only am I going out, but hells bells, yesterday I reconnected and had dinner with a friend of mine, He is still a volunteer medic in Tijuana

OMG I am going to die, he actually might have for real come across somebody infected from a series of infectious diseases in the course of his job!!!!!!!

SERIES!!!!!!!!!!

My lord, if you people think being informed is being scared, then you are correct, I am scared... poor definition, but hey, whatever trips your trigger.

Otherwise get your head out of the sand, as for some of us this is of interest due to live experience... my personal fascination with this crap and how health authorities deal with it came from meeting a WHO official, in 1996 when the first warnings first came out and they wanted to get countries to start writing plans. Ironically I have to thank George W Bush for that effort by WHO to finally pan out.. for the wrong reasons but hey, whatever.

And I said what I said, the OP misrepresented the statement from the president of the US, that is called selective hearing

And those going BUT YOU SHOULD NOT PANIC, are the ones panicking. Seen this many times in the course of my work as a rescue worker

It is human psychology... there are even textbooks on this and rescue workers are taught on how to deal with this in the acute phase. Sorry if I am not too happy to see this in the chronic phase... though I get it ok

Humans crave control and any disaster leads to loss of control... and this is starting to affect people personally

Just ask the parents of the kids in the Dallas School District

6. I'm in complete agreement.
Based upon what our government is doing, I have no sense of panic. I have no problem with them being very proactive when the virus has the potential to be as much a killer as the 1918 strain. If it blows over, like I hope it will, we will better off for having tested our ability to cope with a pandemic. Erring on the side of caution is what we should expect from a responsible government.

7. "may" "may" "may"
within 2 months, the *first* wave of the 1918 version already had 10s of 1000s of cases.

14. I think that a lot of people aren't buying the hype anymore
I was down at Disney World last night with a friend. The place was packed and no one was wearing a surgical mask. The problem now, as I see it, is that the media has hyped so many "health threats" that if something serious does come along there will be a "boy who cried wolf" response to it.

and ask for masks that painters use, to protect them from harmful fumes.
