NORTHPORT, Ala. -- A 24-year-old man likely will rethink his habit of sleeping with a gun after police said his 40-caliber pistol discharged and hit him in the shoulder on Wednesday.

A police detective said the wound was not life-threatening.

The shooting at his apartment complex was ruled an accident.

....where individuals have admitted they won't go out of their houses unless they're carrying a pistol---and three fully loaded magazines. It's the three magazines thing that gets to me; how much fear do you have be burdened with to tote that much firepower around, enough for a full scale street fight? What sort of thinking (if you can dignify it with that term)goes into a decision like that? Where do personal safety measures end and wishing for a bloody altercation begin? the boogeyman? Seriously though, I would have just kept it under the bed or something. In the unlikely event that someone does break in it would only take you about 3-5 seconds to grab it out from under the bed, and about another 3 or 4 seconds to aim and fire. Was this guy THAT paranoid that he had to have it at side while sleeping?

I'm not going to fault anyone for keeping some home protection but a little common sense goes a long way.

If you must have a gun nearby to sleep, what's wrong with a drawer in a bedside table? I'll take fleas, thank you. I sleep with a 70-pound mutt with a very intimidating bark (and, usually, no fleas).
